I saw all the exhibition games....some of the guys that got to stay suck, and the some of the guys handed their walking papers were good players with talent.
For instance, Celek did nothing this preseason...why is he still here? Cutting Hawkins to keep Baldwin I can kind of understand...they think they can develop Baldwin. That's a huge gamble though. Not as big a gamble as dumping Jennings though.
Just wait for the first botched long snap though.

I'll agree that it happens every year. It may not matter for a team that's stacked to the gills like the Niners. But I don't believe in giving a free pass to every bad decision made by management and the coaching staff.

That's not Baalke. That was a coaches' decision. So you're saying that Harbaugh and his assistants acted out of stupidity. Maybe. They don't get everything right and may be into playing their own favorites.
I agree that Gray looked to have a hell of a lot more latent potential than Celek, for example, but we are not privy to all angles the coaches were looking at. Disappointing nonetheless.
Another area I don't like how the team trended was at WR. They eschewed gusto and just went with the some old "meh".
Sometimes in the past after an apparent disappointing move, the team turns around and springs a major coup. Let's hope that the Niners spring another nice surprise for their fans.

I'm pretty sure Baalke gets the final say.

Annual Webzone tradition, cry about some random scrubs that were cut, talk about what a HUGE loss it will be, but then be nowhere to be found when the aforementioned scrubs look like....well scrubs for their new teams.
Does anyone here still think Nathan Palmer was a major loss?
Good call!
I think he is available right now.

And I am pretty sure it's a joint effort. example, Ventrone, a Brad Seely guy. Coaching Staff gpt their word too. Not all Baaklke. If you're pissed off, dont blame just Baalke. The coaches are the ones trying to get the best out of these players.
I love how fans think they know more than Baalke, or the coaches. Maybe Celek looked better in practice. I would of kept both. Ventrone is a ST'er, Punt Protector. Why have our starting FS back there doing it. when a guy reliable in ventrone can.
If Baalke, Harbs, Roman, Fangio, Seely, etc... see it as good, then I am fine with it.

I'm guessing about now the Niners are figuring out how to get a developmental TE on the PS. With their offense, they'll need to bring someone in/up if one of the TEs gets injured during the season. That's what's vexing about Gray getting picked up.
Celek may be generic, but he's got a year of experience with the offense and at this point is a better blocker, a skill that weighs heavily with the power running and read option offense. Keeping both of them on the roster would have meant losing a special teams ace, none of which are expendable at this point. If Gray had shown extraordinary ST skills, though -- which he didn't in preseason -- he might have been retained.

Celek is a much better blocker.....that's more important out of your #3 TE than a guy who's a somewhat better receiver, has potential but is a mediocre blocker. Gray simply didn't have a spot on this team.
The reality of the situation is that its simply idiotic to claim that the coaches made a mistake when we just don't know, we read what the beat writers write, guess what, those guys aren't NFL scouts either, they don't have professional experience evaluating players, they give us the best view of what they see through their own eyes, however what they see and what the coaches see, might be two entirely different things. People badmouth guys like Moore and Celek, but from the sound of it, those guys solidified themselves during practice, maybe they didn't generate as much hype as others, but the coaches saw something that they liked.
We've also seen that the team is willing to change directions when a player really shows that they can be something special, they ended up dumping Tolzien and keeping Daniels because of his potential.
They have shown themselves to be pragmatic and flexible, not sure how people can question their moves right now considering we just don't know, beyond the preseason games, we literally get to see oh...about 1% of what the coaches actually get to see, their interactions with the players daily, their insights regarding practices, how these players do in terms of film study and how well they know the playbook, these aren't things we are privy to.

Gray was a quarterback in college, was learning the TE position.
You really want a guy learning the position in season to be the #3 TE? I don't doubt the staffs ability to coach him up, but this is a SB squad. Ain't nobody got time for that

Just because a player doesn't show us FANS "anything" in 4 meaningless preseason games in which they play just a portion of snaps, doesn't mean they haven't shown the COACHES much during several weeks of Training Camp, OTAs and Minicamps.....in the case of the few returning players like Celek, Wilhoite etc. they also have the benefit of last seasons production to backup the coaches decision. Celek is a better football player than Gray. Period.
