If Okoye shows too much this pre season he may have to be protected on the active roster
Dobbs is expendable
We are reloading the DE positions from a soon to retire J.Smith and an aging Ray Mac
Tank is hopefully quality starter material
TJE is a good backup
Dobbs is a DE who made a name for himself helping Aldon Smith shine in pre season games.
If Okoye can use his bull rush and consistently collapse the pocket he is a keeper. It may be his only skill at this point in time but if it is an elite level skill you keep it on the roster.

Too many much more skilled/experienced players ahead of him: my guess at the final 6 will be: J. Smith, Dorsey, Ray Mac, Carradine, TJE & Dial. Not likely they'll keep more than 6...and if the do, Dobbs is the likely keeper.
I'd keep that 6 as well, stashing Williams on the PUP list. Dobbs is streaky, IMO, and a better 4-3 end than a 3-4 end. If we kept 7 (I think we should, since Cowboy and RayMac are getting old), I'd actually prefer Okoye to Dobbs. His apparent improvement from last year is incredible, especially if you consider that he wasn't allowed to practice once they put him on IR after the preseason. His physical gifts, combined with his demonstrated ability to learn a new sport quickly, give him a boom potential that Dobbs will never possess. At 3rd-string DL, potential can trump immediate production.

Not to mention, but it could end up being a mistake we'd regret (might even bite us in the ass) if a rival team somehow picks him up....
if he does not earn it, he does not earn it. you do not give a roster spot to someone just because you are scared a rival will pick them up. besides, someone picking him up and having him hurt us is pretty far down my lists of worries. lets see what he does when the bullets start to fly against other people before we give him a roster spot ok?
No CC we will place him on the roster no matter what... and that's final
Roman will try to throw him in the new (pizza-up-the-gut jumbo package) on 3rd and 15

Holy crap. Forget Staley. You know this dude can catch. Imagine him running at you full speed as a DB.

... knowing Roman, he might suggest that

This dude can be a real tool (no pun intended) ... but yeah, Harbs does like versatility, right?
I can picture that.... he's going full speed, no DB in the right mind wants to go head to head so they'll try to cripple him. I'd tell Okoye (if that's the case) dive at the defender when he's a few ft away. The defender would either jump over to avoid the hit, get his legs blasted or get a concussion ... you ain't tackling that monster at full speed.

Not gonna happen. Okoye will be a Niner. At this point, and as I have said previously, it is still early but Okoye seems to have amazing progress. He is man handling fools off almost 100% mental reps. I find it amazing honestly and I am rooting hard for this guy. I think Okoye is gonna be a player, and something that most the nfl doesn't have on their roster but the Niners will.

Your post brings perspective. We've made the investment in this athlete we may as well see this project through and not let someone else benefit

Finding a spot on special teams will really help his chances. Can't wait to watch him this preseason. I think he'll get a lot more reps this year.
I really hope so because I am excited as well. From the moment I learned of this guy I have been rooting for him. The one aspect of the game I was worried about was the contact, but he has stated in a recent article the contact is one of his favorite parts of the game. He loves to prove himself physically against another athlete. It's a power trip for him that he gets off on, which bodes well for his continued progression.

I think - from a potential ceiling point of view- in my opinion, if he ever goes as far as his full potential, he can be a Tony cassillas or a Randy white. Randy and too tall Jones (Okoye and aldon) maybe they could be like mark gastineu and Joe klecko. Man I am totally stoked that he's made the progress he has made.
From DeUh:
3. Lawrence Okoye - @grantcohn Lawrence Okoye. Pushed Al Netter into McLeod Bethel-Thompson, who was standing about five or six yards behind the line of scrimmage in the pocket. Netter could not hold his ground against Okoye. Read more at http://www.49erswebzone.com/forum/niners/178667-2014-training-camp-thread/page53/#cmsr6T1qVY36wtmA.99
So right now he's throwing back (bull rushing) T and G's 7 yards INTO the QB. How huge is this skill for a DE in the 3-4? When Justin was at his best, he was doing that on a regular basis and Aldon was cleaning up. We haven't heard of this ability with TJE or Dobbs yet. Like Harbaugh said, Okoye will also learn counter moves to bull rushing as well but right now, that's his bread-and-butter. Next we'll have to see how he handles stuffing the run. If he can continue to push the OL back and help seal that edge (force things back inside) while also collapsing the pocket like he's doing, we have a keeper. He can learn pass rush moves with his long arms from Justin/RayMac/Aldon/Brooks.
He's going to be a fun one to watch esp. re: play recognition. It seems like he's getting better and better...
Once he gets his swim and rip moves, he'll be unstoppable. There is a lot of GM's that will be watching this team throughout the pre-season. Haarbalke tried protecting Cooper and Lost him to KC. I'm pretty sure if we cut dobbs or Okoye, they will be playing against us down the road. I'd rather not have to play either at C - link field.

They are not going to be able to hide him, so it is the IR or he is on the roster.

i guess you think people are just chomping at the bits to get this guy, when he has proven not one thing,, aside from the fact he works hard. lol at how much people over value some players around here. he is a nice story, he works hard, he is a hulking strong man, other than that what has he done to make you think he is better than any of the other d line guys we have on the roster

cc you are and will be 100% correct, until the second preseason game. Then it will probably be all over as far as figuring out where this guys trajectory is headed. And it looks like better news than I expected, truthfully.
