Agree, we should have been getting his confidence up by dumping off to him on 3-5 yard routes. Curl types where he could use his body to shield defenders. We did the opposite seemed like he was deep a lot and he'd drop the ball and we would ignore him the rest of the game. That's a horrible way to get a guys confidence up. Why send him deep instead of getting him going with 3-5 yard routes and then once he starts doing well there maybe have him do a double move and get him deep.

That's it.

Hard to get McDonald involved when he drops so many passes. I wonder if that has to do with him not getting that many looks.

They would throw to him like 1 a game and usually some complicated deep ball route. It's hard to say the guy can't catch if the 1 time a game he gets a bomb that he doesn't bring in.

He had 3 drops on the season. He's a bust, cut him!

Exactly right. That's where the coaches failed. It's called Player DEVELOPMENT. These are young ~22 y/o guys, they need to be developed, coached up, confidence built up, etc. Part of the Seahawks strength is they are better at developing late round picks like Luke Wilson by actually getting the ball and developing his game.

So developing vances blocking skills the biggest concern with him coming out of the draft isnt player development?

They develop players much better than we do. They even get stuff out of Lockett and we never could.....

Obviously they aren't morons, and they do a good job in the running game. But it's a passing league, and receivers are what we need. Receiving is hard, and it requires confidence and practice and development. He got to practice his blocking hundreds of times, but very little receiving development, and receiving is harder for him.

Imagine, you are targeted only one time per game and you get one hard bullet pass thrown at you from Kap, knowing that if you drop it you will be ridiculed and get no more passes probably until you get one next week. There is a lot of pressure, with no confidence built up. Throwing a few short 5 yard passes to the TE and RB is an extension of the running game (Walsh), they are simple very high completion percentage passes, raise the confidence and are good for the development of both the QB and the receiver (TE, RB, etc)
I really think Vance needs to step up in year 2. He was a second round pick and that is pretty early for a TE. Most second round TEs should be considered starters so even though he doesn't start, he should at least have D. Walker type production.

Dont go throwing Mac to the wolves yet, he did ok last year. As Niner fans our standards are high but players need time to develop sometimes.

So let's hope for a breakout year this upcoming season. I just don't want the early round playmakers to be a trend of swing and misses.

ok hows this then, gavin escobar picked 8 spots before mcdonald and playing in dallas where they threw it 150 more times than we did had 9 catches for 134 yards. he like mcdonald was stuck behind a pro bowl tight end.
