Thanks Jakemall--excellent article and it confirmed many of my thoughts that have been left unsaid for the most part--mainly that the offense under Smith helped the defense as much as vice versa.

It was interesting but nothing new that has been discussed here.
There are some holes in that analysis:
Just Smith injury
Aldon Smith shoulder
Gore trying to run with the newly i stalled read option
Playing better teams in the second half

But that doesn't mean there is no correlation. I think it is obvious that field position and TOP can help a defense tremendously.
