I'm sure we would have taken him back at about 1.5 million a year, maybe 2 mil but just cant do 4.375. I think McDonald could be a great player and good weapon but we haven't used him at all really. Mainly just for blocking. Need to have him sit down in soft spots, curls, do some quick outs... just get him the ball and get his confidence up with some easy catches. Then he can start making plays down the field. We haven't gone to him enough to get him into any rhythm. Makes me sick how horribly we have used some of our guys on offense and how uncreative our pass game is.
usually this would make sense... but when I think about it.... having him is more valuable that signing a couple of WRs. We have all these receivers that we have went through to get production...but it hasn't worked out.
just don't look at him as a "Backup" TE. He was on the field almost every play.
so its what Walker brought to our offense.. his mismatches.. being able to run after the catch, pass block, run block....and remember he was the one that was in our Read Option Pistol formations..and he was a great blocker then as well...and a threat coming out of that formation.
compared to a few free agent or rookie receivers.
He laid some beast blocks on many of our biggest run plays

I forgot to add he did so many things for the offense he was a unsung hero and really he was one of the main reasons our offense clicked. And one of the main reasons our offense is terrible now. Niners should have not cheaped out and made sure he stayed a Niner.

The impact ability should be much higher on a 2nd rounder immediately.
It should be much higher. But it's worth noting it took awhile before Delanie became a major contributor. Maybe we can argue that McDonald should become one sooner because of draft position. I think we'd see more out of Vance if he were incorporated into the offense more.

Nope! Just re-sign Boldin and give him Walker's role and have Crabs and Manningham play the outside wideouts with Patton in the slot, or Manningham in the slot with Patton on the outside. Then draft a big bodied WR AND a legit speedy WR to stretch the field.

yeah, bu
I've said something similar, but how much would Boldin want?
I think if we kept Chris Harper...or give him another chance next season.. He attacks the ball like Boldin.. I don't know what didn't work out. But with our coaching staff, you never know if it was him..or just him not getting an opportunity.
I'd LOVE to bring back Boldin...but not at his current rate, especially with him getting older.
Harper would be much cheaper...
but again, would rather have Boldin first and foremost.

I miss the guy.
It's amazing how that 2012 offense was better built than we thought, even with less "names".
