Good, im glad the patent office made that decision. When other official stances are taken against that offensive term ill be glad then also.

Dan Snyder is a insensitive, defiant douchebag.

If you aren't native american you can't comment on this. Just like I can't comment on a black issue or a Mexican issue, or an Asian issue. Or else be labled an insensitive racist.

So far as what a person can comment on,Im not sure exactly what you are saying. Are you saying I personally cant comment if Im not of a said race, in general a person cant comment w/o being labeled?? Or what exactly??Please clarify.

Funny how the majority of people "Offended" by the name "Redskins" aren't Native Americans, they are white liberals. They are being "offended for" Native Americans. They think they are "doing good" by trying to get the name changed.

You really want to Do good with Native Americans? How about you donate money to them so they can restore land or help them build schools or something. Do something that actually benefits them instead of changing a name a majority of Native Americans don't care about.

Native Americans are offended. Maybe not all, but some.

Exactly,if any at all are, it needs to be addressed.

I like how people that say they know someone of a certain race that doesnt have a problem with something, as if that individual is the sole representitive for their "myopic" race.

Ive heard that from white folks and other non blacks who like to say n***a cuz their ignorant ass black friends dont mind. That friend doesnt represent everyone.

Da Skins.........
Man, what a great thread. There are some hilarious responses here.

Here are a couple of real obvious ones that seem to have slipped through the cracks. Please pardon me if they have been posted already.

Washington Racists (Let's just get right to the heart of the matter, shall we?)
or
Washington Pigskins (the outer part of a football; pigs can refer to the "Hogs" or to all members of Congress...just saying)

I am rather fond of these too...

Washington Slime (after all, it was a swamp at one time....how 'bout Washington Swamp)?
Washington Criminals
Washington Crooks
Washington War Mongers

Keep 'em coming...

Cheers!

This has become a political issue and its terrible especially from the MEDIA who have NO backing on this 8 of 10 Native Americans do NOT find it offensive. Their is nothing negative about the name REDSKINS, usually the ones that complain have no clue, like their song goes:

Hail to the Redskins!!

Meh. I need to go to a reservation and say, what up redskins and see if they get mad. Have a feeling they just may.

I work in an Indian casino, know hundreds of Indians. I've asked them and none have said they cared
An answer I once got was
Me: Redskins suck, I wouldn't want them representing me?
Them: well at least were good enough to have a football team named after our race! I bet you'll never see a team named after your race. No Los Angeles Wetbacks for you hahaha
Me: son of a b***h hahaha

lol

Minnesota Ojibwe here ....I could care less about the name ...and I cant name one member of my family that has ever been offended by the name ...probably because we have been called much worse ...hell ...I have cousins that are redskins fans and own the teams merchandise ....it seems to us its the urban Indians that are leading the charge to get the name removed ...us native americans that live on the reservations could care less about the name ...we have more difficult issues to deal with, rather than stew over a team mascot

Great insight from the opinion of someone who actually matters on this topic

From the outside looking in (i.e., me not being Native American), I always thought human-based mascots (e.g., Redskins, Cowboys, 49ers, Rebels, Warriors, and Packers) were a cool homage since these are based on something culturally significant.

Washington Algonquians. Swallow your pride, admit you are wrong, and own the thing. Take a percentage from the gate to donate to local tribal entities in the Virginia area.
On another site someone had them being named the Washington Bureaucrats, to fit the motif, the goal posts would be covered in red tape and would always be moving.

/thread!!
In 1957 General Motors had a car made by Pontiac called a CHIEFTON with a Indian head hood ornament. The Washington Chiefton's or how about after the Northern Cheyenne tribe...the Washington dog soldiers Or the Washington arapaa*****es.

I thought the "Washington Redskins" was original since they became a team no way they would change it if so

No, it isn't the original, they originally played in Boston and were known as the Braves.

There have been stupider name changes for old teams with history, like changing the Oilers to the Titans. I get that there's no oil in Tennessee, so they felt they had to change the name, but "Titans" is the stupidest, most generic name they could have come up with. Anything would have been better. Also, teams like the Lakers moved and kept their old name, so the Oilers could have just gone with it.

While I think the campaign to change the Redskins name is a massive waste of time, especially for the government (Senate majority leader talking, letters from Congress, U.S. patent office etc), if they do change it they should go with Washington Stripes, like on the American flag. Nike could make a REALLY ugly jersey based on that.
