Bottom line: letting every team in the league know that you don't want a player is NOT going to help you get value. Why the hell would anyone offer more than a piece of gum for an item everyone knows you're gonna throw away at the end of the day?
exactly.........
not exactly. We have so much depth at Safety right no that keeping Mays would mean one less roster spot for quality depth. We would have cut Mays and gotten nothing for him. No team would have given us anything less. You don't think that if there were more than one team interested that we would tell one of those teams that we got offered a 7th and they must beat that? No team values him very high.
exactly......... something = better than nothing. Mays was gone regardless, who cares we cut our losses and are moving on... but with an additional 7th round pick. As for Balke now being horrible because of this pick... It was a high risk high reward move that was predicated by his coach's wants... a coach that is no longer coaching the team. Obviously Sing thought much higher of Mays than Harbaugh. Do you really think that Balke would let Mays go if HE was that high on him? Its like Parcells once said... if your gonna cook dinner they should at least let you shop for groceries... Sing sucks at grocery shopping too. NEXT.
Mays will be cut this year or next and we will come out looking smarter to have snookered a team to give a 7th.

Will always be a blemish. What a huge mistake! Frm 2nd rounder to 7th in 2013 no less.
Wow!
You sure this was Baalke's pick?

I would rather have nothing...yeah I said it. That way, Mays can sign with whomever he wants. A measly 7th round pick could end up on the PS, but most likely will be released. I'll have to trust that Harbaugh/Fangio/Baalke knows what they're doing with Mays that he's not even worth keeping on ST and as a back up safety. And Mays had a chance to bad mouth the Niners on this trade deal, but I haven't heard anything negative. Has he? If not, very professional of him. With players these days easily going to the media to vent their frustration, nice of him not to take shots at SF over this whole ordeal.

What is all the fuss, we were going to cut his ass anyway. He was a horrible pick, but at least we were able to get something. Dingleberry sucked so bad and I hate being reminded.

You're right. Could have been Sing's. Weren't there rumors that Baalke and Sing argued in the war room over picking Mays?
Guys...really? Who cares about Taylor Mays? It wasn't Baalke who had Mays as our 4th/5th string safety, that was coach Fangio. It was coach Fangio who implied that Mays could not play safety in the NFL. Simply put, Singletary picked Taylor Mays and Taylor Mays is simply not very good. Might as well get something for nothing.

They weren't rumors, there was visual evidence of it since they were streaming the War Room during the draft. Singletary was in control and Baalke wasn't the GM yet, he was still just the personnel head who was filling in the day-to-day work of the GM since McC left and they hadn't hired one yet.

This is why the rookie wage scale is so important. In the future, things like this will not have as large of an impact. In any draft year their is a clear top 20-25 players, after that it can be argued that their really isnt too much differentiation in value from rounds 2-5, and soon that value will extend to the later rounds too. The overall athleticism of college football has risen and will continue to rise as kids begin to focus on football & training methods at younger ages.
Whether the blame of this pick lies on Baalke or Sing is up to opinion, but the fact remains he is a bust. Through the games he started last year, and through his practice time this year, he showed nothing to the coaches to deter them from bringing in multiple new safeties. And these are coaches that are familier with him from college, watched game film of and game planned against. A bust is a bust is a Balmer is a Coffee, etc. McClueless hit on 1 maybe two players a draft, holding last years draft against him, Baalke has one saving grace in that he and his staff are good at identifying late round talent. It would be nice to hit on every player in the first 3 rounds but thats highly unlikely, being able to identify starting potential in later rounds is just as key. Look at Green Bay, for all the contributions they get from Rodgers, Mathews and others drafted early, they also find value in the later rounds that contribute all over the place and would not have won the SB without it. After this year we will be able to get a decent look at Aldon, Culliver, maybe Kaep then Baalke gets one more draft in my book before its justifiable to start ranting about his talent scouting abilities in the early rounds.

Also makes me think Sing was in on the "lets move up and grab Davis" mentality.

The arguments were happening right before the pick, so we are all pretty sure.

Yup. Davis was physical with an "F" and Singletary wanted a tough OL so he could run his '85 Bear's offense.
