Ian Williams' journey to the 49ers

I'd be fine if we have to rotate and use Williams as the pass rusher and Dorsey as the run stuffer. We got guys who can do as well or better than RJF/Sopoaga for 2 additional years, 3.2 mil (ian was already signed for this year) and 2 years 6 million compared to 3 years 12 million and 4 years 22 million. Seems like we made the right moves.

Also, Ian was listed as 319-320 around combine time and is now at 305. I think he looks like he is in much better shape as well. Seemed a little soft out of college and like almost all players that come here with this staff and team atmosphere they quickly get into the best shape of their lives.

Ian William was an undrafted free agent in 2011.

Williams has played in 4 games—3 in 2012 and 1 in 2011.

He has had a total of three tackles (0 in 2011 and 3 in 2012) in his NFL career.

In his first two years, he showed us very little—next to nothing.

Apparently, he was able to show the coaches much more than what we could see.

In early March, he was given a two extension worth 3.2 million.
The extension contract included a 1 million signing bonus.

Now, he seems to be the leading candidate for the starting nose tackle position.

Sounds like he's really stepping up in camp. It would be great if he, Dorsey and Tank can get into a rotation with Cowboy and Mac.

Yep, Fangio should have a lot more flexibility with the DL this season and Williams should be part of it. Additions of Dorsey, Tank and Dial should create a stout rotation that can be fresh thoughout the season. That's critical if they're going to have a consistent pass rush and stay strong against the run. The Giants have been doing that for years and it's been a strength of their D.

Would love it if he were able to come in and totally take that NT position away from the presupposed favorite in Dorsey. We'd basically have our NT depth back to where it was before with Sopoaga and RJF. Maybe it'd be even better.

If Williams can hold the nose, Dorsey would be able to rotate across the defensive line.
Throw Carradine and Dial into the mix and we would be three deep at defensive end and nose tackle.

That would be very nice indeed.

What happened to Dobbs... They used him at TE, but he showed some good stuff at DT in the 2011 preseason games.

Hell yeah! Love what Im hearing about Ian. He was always a run stuffer

Williams is recovering from a torn MCL suffered during his senior season, but he is a quality run stopper that could be an effective two-down specialist. He is near impossible to move when he gets in good position, as he is very strong and has a thick compact body. He is also a hard worker that never gives up on the play. He can be a very stout run stopper, but he is not athletic or technically refined enough to contribute in the pass rush. Williams is a one dimensional player, but he is human hole plugger and should get picked late.

If he added quickness over the past 2 years and can push the pocket from the middle like he's done so far against our 1st team Oline??? We may have a GEM on our hands!!!! Would love to see him start and have Dosey rotate with all 3!!!

"What's the deal with Ian Williams?" Answer: he's apparently kicking ass with his opportunity. Love the way this team develops it's own players.

SO PUMPED!!!! I think that if Ian can be as good as Soap against the run while providing a pass rush, then Ian + Dorsey ( who is a stud run stuffer as well ) > Soap + RJF. Plus they are younger and cheaper than their predecessors .

Add in that monster Tank, run stuffer Dial, Cam making a big jump this year rushing off the edge, letting Lemonier do what he does best..getting after the QB and our front 7 just got younger, stronger and more explosive! The Seahawks went out and made some short term FA pickups to upgrade their pass rush, but if our young guns pan out, we may have built a young and inexpensive MONSTER front 7 for the foreseeable future!!!

^ ^ I have half-heartedly tried to predict the front 7 fitting on the 53... and I just can't. Depending on how injuries dictate? We will be cutting loose some very good backup talent.

Should be loaded this time around.
