So what if there is no NFL/PA deal by September?

Do the owners hire scrubs and play games with them? Or are they unable to? Apparently they can't sign draft picks. Can they sign anyone to play in scrub games?

Why can't they? That is what they did the last time the players striked.

So if the players are not on strike, then why not just continue playing football? The NFL can put money aside for stadiums as they like and pay the players whatever they want. The players are already under contract, so I don't see what the point of decertifying the union accomplishes for them.

the owners are the ones who are stopping football from being played, because they want the players to take a pay cut. its more complicated than that, obviously, and there are other parts of the disagreement, but its kind of hard to summarize two years worth of information.

I don't think the owners are trying to affect existing contracts, they just want a smaller pool of money devoted to newer contracts. If they don't have a CBA with players, then I don't see what prevents them from unilaterally deciding to do that.

that is true.
i'm sketchy on the exact legal details of how all this works, but i think its safe to say that if the owners made some unilateral decision to make things the way they want them, then the players, obviously, wouldn't sign the deal. and, i believe, since it was the owners decision to end the CBA, I don't think they can hire anyone outside of the union.
