Orton on the block?

The speculation on Kyle Orton's future has ramped up considerably since the announcement that Tim Tebow would be the Denver Broncos' starting quarterback for the duration of the 2010 season. With quite a few teams in need of a fresh start at the QB position, we're sure that this situation has captivated quite a few opposing executives as we head into the offseason.

Thus, in the eyes of Dave Krieger of the Denver Post, the Broncos hold a very valuable trade chip in Orton. In Krieger's view, no fewer than eight teams -- alphabetically, the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, San Francisco 49ers, Tennessee Titans and Washington Redskins -- are looking for QB help this offseason, and could make for good trade partners for the Broncos. We'll add the Seattle Seahawks into that speculative group, as Matt Hasselbeck's recent performance has not inspired much confidence, and the fact that Charlie Whitehurst hasn't been promoted over the struggling veteran tells you all you need to know about the team's thoughts on the bearded backup.

It's unclear what kind of package the Broncos are looking for in this hypothetical world where Orton is on the block. Given that they may be trying to move out of their first-round slot, Orton provides another intriguing trade chip to sweeten any deal, and would obviously increase the package they'd receive in return from a QB-desperate franchise.

UPDATE: Tebowmania is at an all-time high following No. 15's Sunday heroics, lending more credence to the theory that Orton may be the odd man out this offseason.

Absolutely. 4th rounder for him. BANG.
Going to build off of PT's article here.

There could be quite a QB shuffle this off-season. Those 9 teams in the article and I would also add in Buffalo all could be looking for a new QB this off-season.

Guys like Palmer, McNabb, Vince Young, Orton, Hasselbeck, Alex Smith and Fitzpatrick could all very well be wearing new duds next years. 8 of these 10 teams all are in one game of each other going into the last week of the season. Add in guys like Luck, Mallet & Newton in the draft and this makes for a very intricate, volatile situation. One move could set off a chain reaction of sorts.

What if Carolina decides to go after Orton and pass on Luck? Does this open up a possibility of us trading up to get Luck if we're in close enough range? If there is no trade and lets say Buffalo has the 2nd pick and they draft Luck, that makes Fitzpatrick available in a trade. What about if Luck does get picked and they decide on a different QB anyways? What happens if Luck doesn't in fact declare for the draft like everyone is assuming he will?

I could see something like this happening for example: Carolina gets Luck, Arizona gets McNabb, Buffalo keeps Fitz, Cincinnati drafts Mallet, we get Orton, Minesota gets Palmer, Seattle gets Newton, Miami gets Young, Tennessee gets Smith and Washington drafts Pryor in the second round. Just picking names at random here; this could be arranged 20 different ways than my example.

This is one hell of a chess match! I just hope our new GM is up for it.

Orton seems to be the best realistic FA/trade option, but if he'd been stuck with Singletary's system, I doubt he would have performed much, if any, better than Alex this year. Put Alex in McDaniels' system and he would certainly perform much better.

The dude racked up a bunch of yards with no wins. He has always been a loser with decent stats. I would take him to start and groom a rookie but I don't think he is anything near a franchise QB.
It's really too bad the Niners couldn't trade Alex Smith and picks for Orton. Since Smiths started in an Urban Meyer system, he might be able to help mentor Tebow in his progress as a player. Smith's problem has never been his intelligence, it's been his on field decision making (or how long it takes him to process information). Does the combination of Smith's college roots and his exposure to different OC's every year should make him a valuable option as a back up/mentor for Tebow?
no thank maybe Buffallo might grab him
