It should be the highest seeded teams from each conference that make it regardless of division.
it is what it is. you dont go making format changes because of one season.
each division winner hosts a playoff game, the 2 next best records make it as WC. its simple. the NFC West isnt going to be bad forever. the Rams, Seahawks, and Cardinals have been to the Super Bowl 4 times in the last 11 years. sometimes a division is bad, and sometimes they are good. it comes in cycles. just so happens, every team in the NFC West is bad this year. someone will make the playoffs with a bad record, which means its just good luck that they play in a crap division, just as its bad luck for another team who misses the playoffs with a good record.
if there is a trend of 6-8 win teams making the playoffs, then you think about a format change. but one fluke season isnt grounds to make a change.
the NFL picked these divisions, so they cant complain. they slotted the Niners with 3 historically mediocre franchises. All 4 teams are in cycles of not having a franchise QB. AZ's just retired, the Seahawks should have already retired, the Rams are grooming their rookie, and the 49ers still have to find one. they will all get back on track.
i swear people jump the gun way too much...
