Guys I'd like us to look at for 2011 starter. Seems like we are all heading for a complete dismantling of the organization.
Kevin O'Connell - 3rd yr pro. Saw action with NE as rookie, in JETS organization. worth a shot.
Sage Rosenfels - Old guy who could be a solid stop-gap.
Billy Volek - Another guy who would probably jump at the chance.
Luke McCown - Decent year in 2007 when he started 3 games.
Josh Johnson - 4th yr pro, probably would cost us something to get him, but probably biggest upside of any backup QB in league.
I don't know contract situations of these guys, but doubt we couldn't get any of them for a 4th rounder at most. Who else should we look at?

Your forgetting Orton and Palmer will most like be on the open market.. Plus thier still a chance McNabb gets cut.. Also thier Kolb on the trade market..

Of the guys you mentioned, Volek and JJ are the most interesting.

Orton is sign for $9mm next season and Palmer probably will be ~$5/$6 mm. That's too much in my opinion. It'd be a wiser move to look at cheaper options for stop-gap.

McNabb and that ridiculous contract can stay in Washington...
i'd like a shot at Carson Palmer... with a new HC.
i can see that working out for us!!!

Alex probably don't want to come back and with his track record, if it's not the same offense, we probably wont get his best. As it's been the atmosphere around the team for the past month if not longer, everyone needs to move on. I like Alex, but if I were him, It would take a miracle for me to sign back on for any more of this crap.

Other than Volek...I don't see how we are better off with any of those guys. I get it. Smith hasn't worked out...neither did Rattay (he went 2-14 in 2004) but we kept him in 05 while Smith was "learning." We just made the dumb mistake of shipping Rattay off. It wouldn't be the WORST idea (IF..big if...Smith does well) to bring him back IN THAT CAPACITY.
BOTTOM LINE: We need a QB out of the draft.
I wouldn't midn a scenario like: Draft Locker/Mallet/or Stanzi AND keep Smith/bring in a vet like Palmer or Kitna to mentor the new guy.
All i know is we need to do sht the RIGHT way this time around.

word...but i'd still prefer him over any of the guys listed in this thread and over the obvious 2011 free agents listed here
Peyton Manning, IND (likely re-signs with indy)
Brett Favre, MIN (retires)
Matt Moore, CAR
Kyle Orton, DEN
Michael Vick, PHI (likely re-signs in philly)
Matt Hasselbeck, SEA (no, i live in seattle and have watched his steady decline since SB XL)
Troy Smith, BAL (pass)
Trent Edwards, BUF
JT O'Sullivan, CIN
Seneca Wallace, CLE (pass)
Shaun Hill, DET
Brodie Croyle, KC
Chad Pennington, MIA
Tyler Thigpen, MIA
Tarvaris Jackson, MIN
Jim Sorgi, NYG
Kellen Clemens, NYJ
Bruce Gradkowski, OAK
Dennis Dixon, PIT
Billy Volek, SD ( under Rivers one might be inclined to think he's ready to start, not me tho)
Kerry Collins, TEN (this is the most intriguing IMO)
Chris Simms, TEN
Rex Grossman, WAS

Of this list the only one I'd give even a hint of consideration is Volek. Past him, we may as well keep Alex. NONE of these guys would be an upgrade.

Might as well add Donovan McNabb and Carson Palmer to that list.

The Bengals are more likely to give Palmer permission to seek out a trade, meaning go negotiate a new deal with a new team and then they will try to settle on compensation for him. I don't think they cut him outright with the market being in demand for QB's.
