Im for a longer regular season, as long as the players contracts reflect the increase. And two bye weeks sounds right.
As for records, a player that breaks any of Jerry Rices or any other greats records would want to do in a 16week frame time despite the longer season. only then would it mean something to the record breaking player as well as NFL fans in general.
