It's mostly a status symbol of wealth and power.
In terms of investments to make, owning a team doesn't yield much of a short term profit. For example, the group that bought the San Francisco Giants in 1993 for $100M has seen the team's valuation increase to $483M.
However, if you're a Billionaire like Bill Neukom, such an increase is arbitrary in comparison to their existing wealth.
