i so agree with Mark Schlereth on this issue wholeheartedly. he just mentioned how he got off of the phone with NFLPA and how there's 135 workmen's compensation the NFL is fighting to pay for. and now the NFL is cracking down on all this cause they're trying to save face in the future just like the 135 workmen's compensation issue at the moment. and he also mentioned how NFL is trying to protect their pockets more so than the protection of the players. this is just an excuse to protect their own assets.

So, let me get this straight.... In order to protect offensive players, they have now made it beneficial for them to lead with their helmet on every play? Brilliant!
Basically, if you want to avoid suspension, never hit a "defenseless" player. f**king bulls**t.

okay, so now a defender going in for a hit is gonna think, "I better not hit high, let me aim low." Boom, blown out knees, broken legs. Then what??? this is f**king stupid.
Or they will think - let me use my arms and wrap around the guy - like I was taught back in high school and college.
you still have to make initial contact. You're not gonna run up with your arms out like you're about to hug him.
Do you even know how to tackle?
a little
I don't know what you mean - but you are taught never to lead with your head. You wrap 'em around the waist or thighs.
Here's a perfect video:
This is how one should tackle. If every player tackles like this, you won't see stupid missed tackles that plague the league currently.
Coach always told us if you don't keep your head up you could die, pretty simple
That's all well and good but it looks like those kids can't run sub 6 second 40 yard dash times.
It's pretty simple for Goodell to be a business man and fine elite athletes, who've been playing the game since they were outta diapers and can move sideline to sideline in an instant, and never played a down of football, professional or collegiate alike.
Patrick had it right! No one gets mad at an offensive linemen when they chop at a defenders knees. Knee's are more vulnerable than the skull by far!
lol...i keep hearing this argument. If you are tackling a bigger and faster guy - it is even more important to wrap him up and tackle around the waist/hip area. In fact, coach will even tell you to look at the waist and hips are going - and don't look at the head and shoulders to avoid getting juked.

The thing is, this isn't about tackling technique. This isn't about what you do after an offensive player is running with the ball. It's about "defenseless" players. Watch the video sent around the league.
What is a safety playing zone coverage supposed to do when a receiver is about to catch a pass underneath? That safety has to fly full speed at that receiver if he wants to disrupt that play. When you are running full speed, you are naturally leading with your helmet. Are they just supposed to let them secure the ball and start to run before they try to tackle them? If that safety chooses to try and break up the play by making a tackle as the ball arrives, he's risking suspension every time. You just can't adjust your momentum at those speeds if that receiver lowers his helmet as he's coming down with the ball to make a cut and run up field.
So, you either have to let them catch the ball and try to run past you or you dive at the legs like other posters mentioned.

Wow you guys seriously think blows to the head are "cool" and that eliminating them gets rid of the "toughness" of the nfl and makes this a sissy sport?
Maybe you guys should read what they're actually saying: they're not trying to get rid of hard hits. They're trying to get people to stop using their helmets as battering rams. Is this seriously what you guys think is "cool" to watch?
Concussions cause serious serious repercussions, that we're just now starting to learn about. For example, there is actually evidence out there that suggests that Lou Gehrig may not have actually had "Lou Gehrig's Disease" after all and that his symptoms were possibly the result of experiencing many many concussions and not giving his body any time to recover from them.

We're just beginning to scratch the surface in our understanding of concussions, guys, and anything that can be done to try to eliminate them is a positive thing. But of course the NFL will not be fun anymore because we don't get to see people get knocked out by a human spear and crumple to the ground anymore. Real bummer for us.

Watch the video again. They show good example of how to deal with that scenario towards the end of the video. It's pretty simple - don't launch into another player using your helmet to make the hit.

thats true but it makes it hard for a defensive player to have to adjust right away to hit with the shoulder like the Robinson hit on desean. Those are the hits that are just going to happen and i don't think their is anything wrong with that type of hit.

Hey Ray Anderson, how about you suit up try to deliver one of those "proper" hits at full speed and see if you don't go helmet-to-helmet or, shoulder to neck with someone. Or, you and Roger Goodell can just stand there with pads on the field and maybe we can have Ray Lewis and Patrick Willis demonstrate what you're trying to achieve here. You explain the right way to tackle, and they'll be like, "Like this?" Will that un-ruffle your feathers?

that play wasn't fined, if I remember correctly, so I do not think it would warrant any fines or suspension now. They didn't change the rules, they changed the enforcement of the rules. The receiver wasn't defenseless, Willis didn't lead with his head. From what I understand that was and is a perfectly legal hit with no possible repercussions.
But that's the kind of play that will be a litmus test for the stricter enforcements. I will wait and see how the refs handle things and whether or not they use instant replay before deciding on ejections. I think the new enforcement is great in spirit, but I admit that we will have to see how it is put into practice. Players getting ejected left and right will not be good for the game.
