Signing Merriman couldn't be this easy.
If we have even 2 or 3 wins by the time he's released we really better do it. He's basically just been dogging it in SD since they didn't want to pay him and he hates their organization. GET HIM NOW.
I don't know about this take on it. I can't speak for anyone other than myself but if it's me, there's absolutely no way I'm throwing away millions (if not tens of millions) in salary and endorsements by half assing it out there. Merriman's not the smartest man on the planet, but I know he understands the concept of play for pay; that's a fact in this league and this "doggin' it" scenario just doesn't add up to me...
What adds up is his play declining virtually immediately after surgery to reconstruct the PCL and LCL ligaments in his knee along with his ankle problems and whatever other injuries the guy has picked up since, that have kept him out of the lineup. And let's not forget the dubious steroid thing.
Is he unhappy SD? You can be sure of that. The owner's a dick and so is the coach. Would he assassinate his own career by deliberately choosing not to play up to his ability in a contract year? Again, I can't speak for him, but I wouldn't.
If the price is right and he wants to be here then I would say we have nothing to lose. Our pass rush can't get any more impotent. But if he thinks he's going to walk into another guaranteed contract after the direction his career has taken then I would take that as a sign that this guy's more trouble than he's worth. Ball's completely in his court; I'm sure the 9ers are interested once he's available.
