If Gruden was our coach would we be 0-2 right now?

Shop 49ers game tickets
but then who would motivate our players and run onto the field to call timeouts?
Bruce Gradkowski would be our starting QB.

We'd all be saying how his gutsy play reminds us of Jeff Garcia.

Or the near 40 Jeff Garcia would be our starter.

Interesting that Rich Gannon's best statistical season was with Bill Callahan as Head Coach, and even more interesting that Gannon's production fell off once Callahan was fired by Davis.

Gannon suffered a severe spinal injury during 2003 season (courtesy of Derrick Brooks). He was replaced by Kerry Collins as the starter.
We'd have more locker room drama than we have now.

We'd also be starting Troy Smith and he'd be kicked out by the 3rd quarter .

Gannon's shoulder injury was in 2003 and his neck was injured in 2004. He was effective in both seasons, but not early as he was in 2002.

I actually have believed for a long time that the start of the 49ers downfall was tied, in part, to us not getting Jon Gruden as our coach.

When the Bucs were DESPERATE to get a coach after letting Tony Dungy go, and then were suprised by Bill Parcells turning them down (after rumored to have a deal already in place with them), they offered to trade for a coach. They were looking at Mooch and Gruden. The 49ers told them we were not interested. The Bucs ended up trading for Gruden - giving the Raiders TWO 1st round picks, TWO 2nd round picks, and $8 million.

Had we made that trade instead of "not being interested", we would have had 4 extra high round pics between the 2002-2004 drafts. We could have promoted someone as interim coach for the season, and guess what? Gruden's contract with the Raiders was up the next year! Hey Jon, want to move across the bay? Want to come home to the 49ers? Oh and we have TWO 1st rounders this year AND next year? Oh, and we just got a nice $8 million check from the Bucs, so have some nice extra money to pay you with too.

I won't speculate on who we could have had - too many options to trade up with that much ammunition - but 4 extra players, and Jon Gruden. There would have been NO Dennis Erickson. NO Mike Nolan. Probably NO Mike Singletary. This team would not been in the shape it is now, and has been for years.

1- SF is not home to Gruden. He spent 1 year on this staff and that was because of Holmgren. He is originally from Ohio.

2- Who is to say Gruden would not have gotten a contract extension from the Raiders after the 2002 season ? There is no way of telling how that team would have fared and if Davis would have felt differently about the Gruden's offense had he got 1 more year. There is also no way of knowing if Gruden might have accepted a HC'ing job with another team who might have been offering more money as opposed to coming back to SF had we offered him the job here.

3- And let us not forget that there is a lot of belief that the Bucs interest in Mooch was merely a bargaining tactic to pry Gruden from Oakland. The Bucs wanted an offensive minded HC and the rumor has always been that Gruden was the preferred candidate of the Glazers.

So no our downfall has NOTHING to do with us not going after Gruden or not trading Mooch.

1 - A team that he had coached for before, and wouldn't have to relocate his family to go back to.

2 - Davis was speculating if Gruden was worth the money he was sure his next contract would have to be for. If he was thinking that way already, it's doubtful that one more year would have made a difference. As far as another team offering Gruden more money, if we had $8 million in "free" money from the Bucs - it would be pathetic if another team outbid us.

3 - Of course Gruden was the preferred candidate. So? The Bucs were the screaming image of DESPERATE. They would have jumped at whatever offer came first. But we "weren't interested".

1- Money can trump location and he had 1 year on this staff as a QC coach so it's not like his ties run deep.

2- 1 year can make a difference when you already have a playoff caliber team which they were. They perhaps could have won a SB or gone deep into the playoffs. Gruden had taken a losing Raiders team and turned them back into winners.

3- Do you have an ounce of proof that the Bucs would have jumped at whatever offer came first ? Can you provide any factual evidence ?

All you are doing is speculating however you are offering no proof to back your claims.

I highly doubt the team would be better off with Gruden.

We don't need him to build, just tweak things here and there. We're close, just need a competent leader.

At least you know he'd stop at nothing to get a solid QB.
