Jeff Garcia takes the UFL route
Posted by Mike Florio on August 11, 2010 6:09 PM ET

The Omaha Nighthawks have had their eyes on a certain former Raiders quarterback. As it turns out, they're getting another former Raiders quarterback instead.

Spurned by JaMarcus Russell, the Nighthawks reportedly will be acquiring the services of Jeff Garcia.

News of Garcia's decision to join the UFL comes from David White of the San Francisco Chronicle. "I was hoping to get back into the NFL this year," Garcia said. "We had teams that expressed interest, but nobody wanted to fully commit." (Or, for that matter, partially commit.)

Garcia signed last year with the Raiders, but the veteran eventually requested his release. He later would explain that Russell resisted efforts to assist the first overall pick in the 2007 draft with his development. After Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb suffered a broken rib in Week 1, Garcia spent a few weeks in Philly.

Despite scattered rumors of a potential return to the Eagles, Garcia had no other serious sniffs during the balance of the 2009 season, or during the 2010 offseason.

It's possible that a strong 2010 UFL performance by Garcia could prompt a team with needs at the position to give him a shot in December.

Reached for comment, Bengals receiver Terrell Owens said, "If it looks like a Nighthawk and quacks like a Nighthawk . . . ."

(OK, Owens didn't really say that. Thanks to the inclusion of that disclaimer, only 17 percent of you will believe that Owens said that.)

This makes me sad. Garcia shouldn't have to play yet another time in a subpar league.

He's just playing because he loves the game. They only play a handful of games, anyway.

Anybody see the Pros vs. Joes episode with Garcia, Warrick Dunn, and Derrick Brooks. Garcia sealed the win by sacking the Joes' quarterback, it was hilarious.

He doesn't look pretty, he almost looks awkward running and throwing, but somehow he constantly produced positive results. Wish we had kept him longer.

I don't.

Garcia's cap number was above $12,000,000. He was set to make more money than any other Quarterback in the league. All of this while leading the team to a 7-9 record.

No thanks.

Considering the fact that we have had absolute dogs**t at QB since he left, I would've been fine with paying him that money. While he alone wouldn't have held up the franchise from the tailspin we went in after he left, he still would've kept us from being the doormat that we became.
and jeff has said many times he was willing to take a fair paycut. no link, do your own homework. we should have kept jeff atleast 3 more years, and should have stayed west coast offense, imo

If anything it was the opposite.

"When the 49ers offered Garcia a pay cut from $9.9 million, to $5 million, he said no and was waived. A week later, on March 9, he signed a four-year, $25 million contract with the Browns, where he's determined to start over and bring Cleveland a championship." linkage

He turned down the 49ers and then signed for a measly $1M more per year with the Browns.

There's one link, I can't be bothered to find more.
