IMO that's a mistake for them. Living here in SD I can tell you Gates has been injured a hell of a lot the last few years. And he is still very good - great but his play has dropped off somewhat at times mostly due to injuries slowing him down. Don't get me wrong he is good but my feeling is his best years may be behind him. Not that he has terrible years ahead of him. But he's just not worth $7.2 M. ahead of him IMO.
For the people worried about VD we won't lose him. We will Franchise Tag him if we have to.

I was surprised he got the extension too, I thought he was on the downside of his career (old) but I don't follow the Chargers closely so

The problem with that is that there may not be a Franchise Tag with the new CBA.
I think Gates is worth the money. I can still see him playing at a high level for the next 5 years. He'll still get his numbers since he plays in such a wide open offense.

I think that sets the roof for Vernon. Niners need to sign him before the season starts - so they ca focus on signing Goldson
Roof? I don't think so. Davis is going to be the highest paid. His contact will eclipse Gates.

I think he will have more years on his deal to make it look like more but it will pretty much be in the same ballpark. Davis can't justify making more than the best at his position, even though he thinks it's him. Davis will be the best one day, extra years will do it, IMO

He was highest paid as a rookie, I don't see that changing now that he has the brightest future of any TE in the league currently.

This is encouraging for VD. It shows that his team's contract expectations and the reality of the market are not WORLDS apart. My bet is that VD signs a 5 yr extension in 2010.

if vernon plays like he did last year, I have no problem paying him around 8 million a year. (i think 7.5 is fair)
if he f**ks up then i'd start around 6.5
