I don't see any way that we move ourselves back into the end of the 1st round when we have a shot at getting Bulaga, Iupati, Spiller, Haden, McClain and Eric Berry. I don't think we should give up on Coffee just yet. He looked good when he had some decent blocking. Give the guy at least a second year to show us what he's made of...he admitted that he wasn't ready when he had to replace Gore, which is not a great excuse, but it's probably true. If Gore goes down again, we will still need a powerful north sound gap runner in addition to our potential scat back.

I don't see how they would take coffee. maybe a rb from oakland or something but coffee showed nothing during reg season

I saw that too. Of all the possibilities mentioned Coffee for Cromartie sounded the least likely to me.
Coffee and a 5th rounder for Cromartie...
We put Thomas Clayton on the 53 man roster.
Draft C.J. Spiller.
RB Depth Chart for season:
Gore
Spiller
Clayton
CB Depth Chart for season:
Spencer
Cromartie
Clements
Bly
Brown

Wouldn't be a bad move.

Re-signing Bly won't be a gimme

If Clayton hasn't got a shot yet, then he wont be the 3rd RB.
Plus I thought the rumor was a 3rd round pick and coffee, for cromartie.
notice how I said rumor, seeing that there is no name attached to the report, making it pure speculation. I bet the Chargers put something like that out so other teams could compare and try to make a similar offer.

he never said we'd be trading one of our 1st round picks.

That just isn't a fair trade. We should get SD to throw in Philip Rivers as well.

"Senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen had word on Tuesday night that the San Diego Chargers are in the midst of trade talks involving starting cornerback Antonio Cromartie. According to Mort's sources, the Chargers are looking to acquire a running back, not too surprising given the fact that LaDainian Tomlinson is on his way out of town, and Darren Sproles -- who is not a proven commodity as a traditional back -- could hit free agency.
You'll remember a few weeks back, when Dallas Cowboys RB Tashard Choice openly claimed that he was happy in Dallas; the reason why he clarified this was that there was a rumor going around that a Cromartie-Choice trade was in the works. That option has to be considered as still active. Mort also lists the Packers as in need of a CB upgrade, but we'll also throw the Ravens, Giants, Eagles, Falcons and 49ers in that mix. Of those teams, the Ravens, Giants and 49ers could probably offer the best RB coming back in trade: Willis McGahee is believed to be on the block, the Giants can choose between Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw, and the 49ers have Glen Coffee, who is more a poor man's version of Frank Gore than a proper complement.
This one should pick up steam fast, even though prospective Cro buyers have all seen this footage." ESPN, 2010

I still think coffee will be pretty decent, so everyone who has given up on him will eat their words later.
That being said, I hope we trade him, and get cromartie.. can you imagine how much better our D would be with an almost shutdown corner? Who has speed, and could return punts if needed.

I'm already familiar with the terms of the rumored trade. They said that we would trade one of our mid round picks for the Chargers pick AND Coffee for Cromartie. It's a deep draft, but there's a big drop in talent from 13-17 to where the Chargers are picking. I don't think it's worth the risk, especially if Gore gets injured. Then suddenly we're stuck with just a scat back instead of having Coffee to semi-fill Gore's place.

I would give them coffee and A. Smith for Cromartie, hell I would even throw in a 4th round pick!
Nah, my boy went out and worked out for the Chargers last year as a WR. He took Cromartie to school! I know AC was semi hurt but it says a lot when a guy off the streets can come in and break your ankles.
I would still trade coffee for AC in a heart beat!
