What is the shortest possible field goal?

Why do you ask? I was watching NFL network and I think they mentioned a 9 yard field goal in an old play-off game. That was possible in the old days as the goal posts
were on the goal line. As others have said the ball is snapped back 7 yards, so in the old days a 7 yard fg was possible, now the shortest is 17 yards.

i saw that too it was 8 yards it was Tom Dempsey, he did it the same game he kicked the longest FG in NFL history

17 yards isnt it

I have no clue... why is it 17?

In the NFL, goalposts are placed at the back of a 10-yard end zone, and the ball is usually hiked about 7 yards behind the line of scrimmage to be held for a placekick.

so if you put the ball at the 1 inch line, it would be 17 yards 1 inch

16 yrds 11 inches

yeah what he said

what SHE said
I did not expect this from Chief.

Just start watching the NFL yesterday

I keed, I actually ask all my dumb questions here.

Not that this was a dumb question

I can't stand that big headed goof.

Anyway, 17 yards it is...
If the ball is on the 1 inch line, then the ball is snapped 10 yards and 1 inch from the goalposts. The ball is held 7 yards back from that.

17 yards, 1 inch

what if they snap the ball a shorter distance to break the record?

My favorite was, "Actually, it would be 16 yards, 35 inches. Duh!"
