With all of the speculation and chants for Malik Hooker or Jamal Adams (both guys I like) at 2, I figured it wouldn't hurt to search for some underrated/high potential safeties. With the #2 pick, I would prefer to go elsewhere than safety, I believe Ward can be our middle field guy with range, but I'm not opposed to drafting a little competition for him after we secure our more prevalent needs (Leo, ZWR, QB).
Tedric Thompson - Safety who did a little of all coverage at Colorado. One of the best coverage safety in the draft, in 2016 - 63 tackles, 3.5 for a loss, 7 INTs, and 16 passes broken up. Receive Pac 12 honors, and helped make up one of the better secondary in the country.

Blows my mind how much King could fall compared to last year and the beginning of this yrs hype he had, he was considered the number 1 CB prospect by a lot..

Oh yeah he would have been one of the top CBs if he came out last yr...still think he's got skills and could thrive at safety.

As a UDFA sure. But this guy is not a good safety in my opinion. Most interceptions aren't from read it's just bad passes. Gets bailed out by having the 2 most underrated Cornerbacks in the nation playing on his team(Awuzie, Witherspoon)

Don't hear much buzz about Colorado safety Tedric Thompson but his instincts and ball skills are outstanding.

"The 6-foot, 204-pound safety is fresh off a visit to Dallas. Per Pro Football Focus, Thompson was the best cover safety of anyone in the 2017 draft class last year. He surrendered only 26 receptions on 65 targets (40 percent) for 318 yards and one touchdown. That was good for a 21.3 passer rating against, which also ranked tops among all safeties. Now for the bad news: He's a non-factor in the run game. Thompson is a mid-round pick with pronounced strengths and weaknesses. He must find the right scheme fit, preferably one that allow him to stay away from the box."

His 40 and shuttle . If we don't go Hooker, it would definitely help us to get someone who can backup Ward. Marcus Williams is really the only other one that I'd like to see us take a stab at, but if we're trying to draft decent depth, then maybe this guy?
I think we can get stud starters in the 4 th round though, and I don't see him starting.

those stats don't lie though...best cover S in the 2017 class, 21.3 pass rating which was tops.
I wouldn't put all my stock into him as a future starter, but just another name to add to the list of good DBs. Budda Baker crushed the 40, 3 cone, and shuttle. Another name to look at is Desmond King (great 3 cone and shuttle numbers) 14 INTs in 3 yrs and a great tackler sounds like he's moving to FS.

Stats do lie, how many times was he assigned man coverage? How many of those times were at a down and distance where throwing to his man didn't make sense? Does double coverage count.
I think Desmond King stays at CB in our scheme and would do well.
Budda Baker is a stud, but will cost pick #34, the ball production isn't there to scare teams but he'd play just fine. I think he's a bit of a Ward clone.
My preferred Safeties are Hooker (spent enough time explaining why on his thread) Eddie Jackson, and Marcus Williams. I think these are the only 3 who would beat out Ward and keep him at CB, preferably back to Nickel CB.

Totally gonna disagree on anything positive about Thompson. Just don't see anything good about him accept he is good at getting interceptions against bad QBs on horrible passes. The Washington game film for him literally had me just going what the F*** are you even doing out there. Didn't even try and locate the ball at all.

There's a lot to work with imo...I'm not saying draft him in the top 34. I'd rather get a developmental FS who does have a eye for getting INTs and was the best cover S last yr. I think Ward can be a top end FS and I'd rather let him have a chance at it first.
