Pierre Garcon WHY???? Draft/Offseason related

Why is EVERYONE now putting Garcon in their mocks and drafts? Why does everyone now love him and want to pay him BIG bucks? I really hope we do not fall for that trap. Look at his career yards and td stats:

2016 Washington Redskins 1,041 3
2015 Washington Redskins 777 6
2014 Washington Redskins 752 3
2013 Washington Redskins 1,346 5
2012 Washington Redskins 633 4
2011 Indianapolis Colts 947 6
2010 Indianapolis Colts 784 6
2009 Indianapolis Colts 765 4
2008 Indianapolis Colts 23 0

6 TDs max with a career average of 785 (881 with worst season removed) yards while he is getting older and going on his 10th season!?!?

For comparison, here is Torrey Smith's stats:
2016 San Francisco 49ers 267 3
2015 San Francisco 49ers 663 4
2014 Baltimore Ravens 767 11
2013 Baltimore Ravens 1,128 4
2012 Baltimore Ravens 855 8
2011 Baltimore Ravens 841 7

His career average is 753.5 yards (850.8 with worst season removed).
I honestly agree.

Agree!
When you're rebuilding a program, it's just as important to consider how a guy can impact your locker room and help shape a winning, hard-working, professional culture as it is the production on the field. Sure, we can sign someone like Michael Floyd, Desean Jackson or Josh Gordon who clearly have more on-field talent at this point (or probably ever) than Garcon does, but are these the kind of guys you want to help reshape the culture of your franchise?

IMO, the wise approach in this current situation is to build through the draft and sign key veterans who still have something to offer on the field, but who can also contribute to the overall rebuilding effort of the 49ers brand/organization.

Garcon isn't the only person who fits that bill, but he's definitely one of them. Though I have no idea what Kamar Aiken (28) of the Ravens is like in the locker room, but he could be a younger version of Garcon and worth a look.

That is a very valid point. But why do people want to pay him big bucks for such a role? You pay big bucks for talent. You pay a low/average rate for a seasoned veteran you want to mostly be a locker room presence.

IMO, when you're rebuilding, you pay big bucks to anyone who makes your team/organization better. Call it a rebuilding tax if you will, but players know bad teams need to and will generally overpay to improve their roster. Also, in the NFL, it's less about the money you dish out and more about how you manage your cap that truly matters. So overpaying a moderate talent like Garcon only hurts you if you're squeezed for cap space...but if you have nearly $100M of cap space (which we'll likely have after we part ways with Kap and a few others), you front-load a deal with guaranteed $$ (which players love) to take advantage of your rebuilding years then have that guy's contract drop off as your team becomes more competitive.

First why is this in the draft forum?

Second Garçon is a great route runner, he's worked under Kyle (which he had career numbers), he's tough as s**t (think of smaller/quicker Q)...why in the world would you not want a guy like him on our team? I'd love to have our younger WRs learn from his play.

Also what do you mean big bucks? $6 million a yr isn't big bucks man.

It's pretty simple...if you have a QB who can get him the ball, he'll make plays. Let's face it the current Niner WR corps has got to be the worst in the league. Signing a veteran baller like Garcon gives the younger receivers a model...a guy who routinely fights for the ball. None of our current WR's do that. He still has good YAC...another thing missing in our WR's. He has a lot of Anquan Boldin's traits and that's a very good thing to have on your team, especially one with such a rag-tag bunch of receivers. Come on, man, you have to see his value...if not, you're really missing things.

Simple. Garcon or Smelter? Garcon or Streater? Garcon or Ellington? Garcon or Burbridge?

He's a big upgrade that's experienced directly under Shanahan in the same offense we are running in SF. Plug and play signing and mentor.

Garcon has never been what you would call a redzone target. He is however a reliable possession receiver with some yac ability. He keeps the chains moving and if you don't keep the chains moving you dont even have an opportunity to score TDs.
Terrence Williams anyone?

You would pay him as much or more than Edelman, D. Jackson, Tate, Benjamin, Sanu and Decker? http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/average/wide-receiver/
He's a quality receiver that won't break the bank. Someone like Alshon Jeffery will probably cost $60 mil over 5 years. Garcon is more like $24 mil over 3 years.

He's also linked to Shanahan, having signed in Washington as a FA when they were there. He was drafted in Indy while Tony Dungy was there, so that may be a link to John Lynch.

That and we're completely devoid of talent at WR, so beggars can't be choosers lol. I'd welcome Garcon with open arms.
