Only bones to pick would be:
1. The price for Jimmy G. Got a feeling belicheck is gonna fleece some team's gm for a haul of picks. It will be a good first test for the gm/HC relationship. McDaniels might scream for Jimmy, but the new GM Wolf might "baalke" at the idea of giving up too much draft capital. Gonna be interesting seeing who leverages for power. It ain't gonna be holding hands. One person is going to make the decisions. Which leadse to the second bone.
2. Am I the only one that questions McDaniels leadership? I think he is a great OC, but to be the top dog, I just don't know. I don't see qualities that scream fearless leader. Maybe this has partly to do with his stint in Denver, but he does not have strong leadership traits, and I question his ability to motivate and analyze players. His Xs and Os are innovative and adaptive, but wasn't Kelly also this way? We had a McDaniels type with Kelly and it didn't work.
Either way, fun mock to read. Looking forward to more.
The price for JG will likely be a 2nd round pick and a future 3rd round pick because he demonstrated success (briefly) in the NFL. The Alex Smith deal was two 2nd rounders for a proven commodity and that has actually turned out to be a steal for Kansas City, so if you are sure he's the guy then go get him. With MacDaniels there the fit for JG is great. He knows the scheme already and has proven he's ready to start in the NFL so it would ease the transition the 49ers would have to make. Then if the 49ers were to go WR in round 1, suddenly the offense has some building blocks.
As far as his leadership nobody really knows except for the players. From everything I've read it sure seems like he has settled down appreciably from his early 30's and is ready to take another shot at being the top dog. Consider the alternative. McVay? Joseph? Shanahan? Maybe, but they are this years versions of Josh MacDaniels who may flame out just as he did in Denver. What I know is that he has an endorsement from Tom Brady and that actually means something.
The 49ers are in such bad shape right now that it is going to take a few years anyways. I would rather have a guy like McDaniels with upside who comes from a winning program (Belichek wins) with a winning culture who has the benefit of insight into his previous shortcomings as a head coach. McVay or Shanahan may turn out to be terrific coaches, but my gut is telling me to go with the guy who's got more experience and who is from a winning program.
