I would love to get Howard in the 2nd if he is still there. He would be awesome in McDaniels system. People need to remember that we are officially REBUILDING. We are not winning any play off games soon. So let's Build right. Get the pieces the first 2 years and supplement in FA and maybe we can contend in year 3. There are no Quick fixes with this Pile Trent left us. Let's do it right from the start.

That's a load of crap, sorry. We're gonna have a rookie or a QB in a new system, there's going to be a lot of check downs and short passes to the TE's. We need the TE to be an athlete that can create plays after the catch, not "blue collar" scrubs.

This team needs to go BPA in the early rounds, if that's OJ then so be it. The cupboards are bare in SanFran.

If we were to trade back. And miss on Williams.
Then oj would be good pick up. With daniels as coach
Running his two tight end sets

My thoughts as well. If McDaniels is the HC, then a second starting caliber TE becomes a more valued position for us. We've obviously made a large financial commitment to Vance, but that shouldn't stop us from considering OJ Howard if he's still there in the 2nd rd. A stud TE in that system is just as valuable as a stud WR. I think he'll be taken in the 1st rd though. Very well-rounded TE, and I have a feeling he'll be more productive as a pass-catcher in the pros than he was at Alabama.

I like David Njoku too. I like him a lot. Either of these guys would be a massive improvement but OJ Howard is special.

One thing I will say about TE's, their bust rates in the top half of the first round tend to be incredibly low, one of the safest positions to draft early as they have to be truly beast mode type prospects to get taken in the 1st round.

Alabama TE O.J. Howard displayed the skills of a "potential top-10 pick" in Tuesday's Senior Bowl practices, writes Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline.
"The Crimson Tide tight end started the day with a one-handed grab on an errant pass and continued his momentum throughout the day, avoiding drops and consistently catching the ball away from his frame," Pauline wrote. "He did a nice job tracking and adjusting to under thrown deep balls, used his speed to get open up the seam for an easy touchdown catch and added another one-handed grab for good measure." The 6-foot-6, 251-pound Howard is one of the three-best prospects at the Senior Bowl. He's been comped to Jimmy Graham.

Nice breakdown of Howard, and how Alabama did not really showcase his ability

I'm surprised there isn't much talk about him especially after his combine results
COMBINE RESULTS
40 YARD DASH: 4.51 SEC
BENCH PRESS: 22 REPS
VERTICAL JUMP: 30.0 INCH
BROAD JUMP: 121.0 INCH
3 CONE DRILL: 6.85 SEC
20 YARD SHUTTLE: 4.16 SEC
60 YARD SHUTTLE: 11.46 SEC
With 34inch arms 10inch hands and a 6'6 frame. If he was a WR this thread would have 15+ pages. From what I've read he's a terrific blocker and runs good routes Wouldn't say it's out of the realm of possibility if we traded back a got this guy.

I'd be happy if we moved down and took OJ. People on this forum are obsessed with the notion of a "big red zone target." Well, here you go.

This is true. There would be some upset people that feel tight end just isn't a big need for us right now. Just like you have your crowd against Hooker or Adams because of Ward moving to free and Reid/ Tartt being at SS now, or the crowd against Thomas because of Buckner and Armstead.
People have to get in the mindset that Shanahan and Lynch have zero ties to anyone on the roster that they themselves didn't bring in through free agency. This roster will continue to turn over the next couple of years. I don't think there's one position on the team that should feel safe going into the draft. Shanahan and Lynch wanna put their print on the team and win with the players who fit their vision and not what was Baalke's vision.
