2017 Draft Needs

Texas A&M redshirt junior WR Ricky Seals-Jones will forego his final season of collegiate eligibility to enter the 2017 NFL Draft.

Seals-Jones finished out his Aggies career with a 6-34-1 line in Wednesday's bowl loss to Kansas State. For the 2016 season as a whole, the 6-foot-5, 230-pound redshirt junior caught 26 passes for 333 yards and a touchdown. He did not surpass 600 yards receiving in any one season at Texas A&M. While the statistical output has been lacking, Seals-Jones has prototypical NFL size and NFL Media's Bucky Broks wrote at the end of September that the wideout possesses "the kind of size and athleticism to terrorize opponents in the red zone." This is an opinion that has been echoed by multiple analysts over the course of Seals-Jones' career.

This dude is gigantic for a wideout

I think we do need another high quality RB. Hyde is great when he's on the field but he's gotten hurt every single year. Fournette is actually #2 on my big board right now behind Garrett.
Imperative--
  1. FQB
  2. OLB
  3. ILB
  4. WR
  5. NT
  6. OC
  7. WR, WR, WR

They need FAs or a miracle to get enough picks this year!

Offense
-QB (Im stll holding out hope Kap makes a comeback. I know, I'm a romantic).
-Back-up RB, preferably a speedster
-A possession WR (similar to Crabs) AND/OR a WR with SIZE and catch radius
-A deep threat WR IF Torrey isn't in long term plans
-Upgrade SLOT WR (I'm fine if Kerley stays as slot, but can also upgrade it)
TE, Celek and McDonald are serviceable but could use an upgrade
-Center, Kilgore hasn't developed as hoped

Defense
-NT, major hole on team
-DE, need to prepare if Armstead fails to develop
-Pass Rush OLB (edge rusher), without Mr. I Got Fat Because Wifey is Pregnant we struggled to have a pass rush, and I simply don't trust that dude to stay out of trouble
-Outside CB, we need a corner w/ size that can match up against the 6'3+ WRs of the world (keep an eye on Robinson though)
-2 ILBs, Bowman may be done. Never filled the hole left by Mr. Chris "I'm scared" Borland
-SS - To grab a true playmaking safety. Bethea plays cuz he has some football IQ and Tartt has some physical tools, but neither has both to be a great player

Still accurate today...like the humor too.

Especially if one of those WR's is a dynamic returner.
Our draft needs are are pretty simple. Football players who play with an edge and an attitude. As far as positional needs I think everything covers it.
Some interesting mocks lately! Draft Tech has the niners taking:
1. QB Watson (I could see Trubisky instead)
2. WR Rudolph (seems very high but WR is a definite need--Smith-Schuster or Westbrook might be more likely)
3. DT Jones (NT?)

Another site has the niners taking a QB, C/G and NT with their first three picks.

I like the idea of strengthening the NT position to help whatever LBs they have next year.

Totally agree with this. My POV, is that we fill holes like NT and WR in FA, and than focus on the first three needs in the draft. Going QB/OLB in the first two rounds of the draft makes sense. Either Garrett/Mahomes, or Trubisky and someone like Lawson or Harris who falls to the 2nd (one of the top pass rushers will). Then I feel pretty good about drafting an ILB in the 3rd-5th rounds. This class has some depth, and the hit rate on backers later in the draft is higher than average.

Here is my mock de jour:

Resign:
Jeremy Kerley
Gerald Hodges
Glenn Dorsey

FA:
Brandon Williams NT Ravens
TJ Lang OG Packers
Pierre Garcon WR Redskins
Brian Hoyer QB Bears
Jaquizz Rodgers RB Buccaneers

Draft order
1 (2) – Mitch Trubisky QB
2 (34) – Charles Harris OLB/DE
3 (66) – Pat Elflein C
4 (102) – Anthony Walker JR ILB
4 (139) Comp Pick – Ryan Switzer WR
5 (147) – Corey Clement RB
5 (162) – Josh Malone WR
6 (188) – Chad Kelly QB
6 (206) – Josh Tupou NT
7 (224) – Freddie Stevenson FB
7 (225) – Montae Nicholson SS

Sounds very good to me! I want to see the middle of the defense strengthened and skill positions addressed. And I really like the idea of taking a chance on Chad Kelly. He may flame out due to character issues but perhaps this injury and being drafted late will temper his spirit and he'll learn from it. If not Kelly Mahomes would be a nice second QB pick.

My dream scenario would be:

1st RD- Trade down with NYJ (get 2nd rd and 5th rd pick)
1st RD From NYJ- WR- Mike Williams- Clemson
2nd RD- CB- Desmond King- Iowa (Seen a few projections that have him slipping to the late 1st/ early 2nd rd)
2nd RD- from NYJ- TE- Jake Butt- Michigan
3rd RD- CB- Budda Baker- Washington (Move him back to SS)
4th RD- RB- Donnell Pumphrey- San Diego St.
5th RD- OG- Kyle Kalis- Michigan
5th RD from NYJ- OT- Will Holden- Vanderbilt
6th RD ***TRADE WITH NE***
7th RD- LB- Hardy Nickerson- Illinois

TRADE- 2017 6th RD pick and 2018 3rd RD pick to NE for QB- Jimmy Garrapollo

Target LB's and WR's in Free Agency
