MadDog49er Seven Round Projection April 1 2015 and Notes

Greetings on April Fools Day!

We are finally into April, and that means one thing: We are in Draft Month. Here is my full draft projection, which is not a direct mock, since trades shuffle nearly one fourth of the slots. It is simply a ballpark idea where I believe a player will be selected. Working extensively on the back fifty picks this week. Feeling good about the front 200.

Really enjoyed watching games this week. A few notes:

Saw four Iowa games this week, all snaps. Here are some observations about some Hawkeye players:
* Brandon Scherff, as explained many times before, is a vastly overrated LT. He allows a handful of pressures/hits/sacks per game. He has to kick inside, and will be a really good player.
* Andrew Donnal is an inexperienced (less than two years of starting time), but stud right tackle. He looks bored half the time in games, because he is so much better than the competition. He is a natural tackle (unlike Scherff), who can bend his knees, sink his hips, release and then reposition easily. He is the best tackle in the draft that nobody is talking about, and will be a starter in this league. I think he gets selected before most people think (4th round), but, to me, he is early third round value.
* Carl Davis has to be double-teamed at all times. Left alone, he simply manhandles his guy. In one funny play against Wisconsin, he is singled, reaches over the guards body, grabs onto Mevin Gordon's jersey, and spins him around for a loss. One hand, with a guy pushing on him. This guy is a natural as a 43 DT or 34 DE. Never gets pushed back.

I continue to be depressed watching safeties. The latest bloodbath is Cedric Thompson, of Minnesota. Good athlete, but mediocre instincts, missed tackles, bad angles, and blown coverages. The Purdue game was ugly. He did have an interception in that game, a ball thrown right to him. Other than that- yuck. I'm hoping Derron Smith of Fresno State will work out well, because this group needs help. Watched two more Alabama games this week. Someone will have to explain to me why Landon Collins is praised so highly. I simply don't get it at all. Solid in run support, but a liability in coverage.

In the Purdue-Minnesota game, really fun late round prospect to watch- Akeem Hunt. Short, but lightning quick. Going to make an NFL roster. Good hands, excellent kickoff return guy, an offensive coordinators dream on third down in the flat. Terrific role player.

One guy I have moving up my best board (not listed here), is Grady Jarrett. It won't matter to Niners' fans, because he is exclusively a 43 one-gapper., but really quick, disruptive, 3 down guy, who does a lot of dirty work to make Stephone Anthony look pretty. Just a headache for offensive linemen. He is this year's version of Aaron Donald- undersized, but so good. I have him as early second round value.

Clocked Breshad Perriman's forty about ten times, and came up with a range of 4.24 and 4.29. That is so fast. The problem for me is that is all he is: a long stride-deep ball threat. I love the speed, but he doesn't offer anything else. Less catches per game than WR mate- Rannell Hall, who is a late-round prospect.

Someone undersized but fun to watch is Georgia Tech RG (center prospect) Shaq Mason. Short, squatty, but they ran all day and night over him the entire season. Saw him play five full games this week, and while he does not pancake people, he uses good angles to shield defenders away and open holes. Most impressively, he is lightning fast off the snap. Needs to learn the center position. In a below par group, he is someone to watch in the 4th-5th round.

Let's end with a guy the Niners could pick up. Late round guys are special teamers or developmental players. One to watch is Tyler Varga, RB, of Yale. Great pedigree (both parents stud athletes), he has a solid Pro Day yesterday, matching a very good Senior Bowl week. Rocked up physique, but lateral ability, smart, and hard worker. Will make a roster for sure. I see him off the board in the early sixth round. A guy people will cheer for, no doubt.

Much more later. I could go on for days. Cheers.

Awesome. MadDog, do you see Jeff Luc possibly being selected by the Niners and filling a need at ILB? Do you see Luc as good enough to play in the NFL? Is he starter material?
Mad, I know you said you don't like this year's safety class. What do you think of Clayton Geathers of UCF? He played safety there for all 4 years I believe. And great work, always look forward to your posts. The draft is right around the corner!

Don't know about starter, but a guy who works hard on every down. Will make a roster someday.

One of the better safeties in a bad safety class. Could leapfrog a number of the bigger named guys depending on a team feels about him. Could be all over the board on draft weekend, as early as a third and late as a sixth
April Fools, slow learner.
Right away I would say that second round looks more appealing to me than the first.
MD,
Is there anyone you feel the Niners should trade up for in the first round, especially if the player slips a few notches?

The lower half of the 1st round just does not have 1st Rd value. The real value of this draft is in Rds 2 thru 4.

I hear a lot of praise about Carl Davis but yet most expect him to go in rd 2. Why is he lower than the 5 other DE/DT ahead of him?

At least you got him in the 1st round.

Hey MadDog,

I looked through your notes. Good to here about Carl Davis. He is a guy I keep looking going back to. What are your thoughts about Davis vs. Goldman vs. Brown. I here this debate a lot.

Also do you think Scherreff will still go in the top 10? 15? with the understanding he is a guard?

And lastly, I couldn't find anything in your other notes about Cameron Erving. He just had his pro day yesterday. and I see you still have him at 30. Any insights you have on him. I know his sample size is small for how much he played center.

Thanks. I always look forward to your notes.

And ignore the Aprils Fools Webzone Seahawks crap below

Why did you leave Justin Hardy out of your rankings? He had made it up to 50 in earlier rankings, now he's not I your top 250? What gives?

If one of these guys is on the board at ten, they have to strongly consider making a move: Fowler, Beasley, Rey, White, Cooper. I didn't add Williams, because he won't slide past five, probably not past three.

The NFL is a pass-first league. You need pass rushers, QBs and WRs to make magic work.

I'm personally a big fan of Geathers. NFL Bloodlines and reminds me a lot of Kam Chancellor. Would love to see the team snag him in the 4th or 5th to groom behind Bethea.

Of course, great work as usual, MD. I'm only halfway done -- I'm strapped for time due to wedding planning and such -- but I will look to release mine within a week or so.

By the way, 100% agree on Scherff. Watching his games I was completely underwhelmed with him at OT. Needs to move inside for sure. Also agree on Perriman.

The magic of Excel Spreadsheets. How about a compensatory in the late third? Number 97. Edited, thanks to you.
