Up to this point, I have been really back and forth on drafting either White/Parker or Danny Shelton. I have just decided that bypassing Shelton if he is on the board would be a huge mistake.
Here are my reasons:
1) WR depth: assuming Crabtree walks, will a blue chip rookie WR be ready to beat out Boldin and Steve Johnson? Im assuming White or Parker could beat out Patton and Ellington, but theyll still be competing for practice snaps. Im not sayimg they dont draft a WR, just maybe not at 15.
2) Run defense (Marshon Lynch stopper)
Yes, the Niners had a great defensive year. But watching some of those games, short yardage siuations made me nervous. Itd be awesome to have a man that big and nimble pushing the oline and freeing up space for their LBs.
3) Depth chart impact
Bringing in Shelton at NT give the Niners a chance to move sme of their other dline around to DE. It cetainly couldnt hurt to try a line up of Justin Smith (if he comes back), Shelton, and Dial. Try running on that front.
4) Impact on the game
With the renewed emphasis on running the ball, how many times will Kaep be throwing the ball? 20, 30, 35? Assuming that Boldin leads the team in targets (8-12), followed by VD (5-8), then add in Stevie Johnson (6-10) your looking at 19-30 passes to those three.
5) Current NT depth
People like to cite Ian Williams ad Glenn Dorsey as the reason the Niners dont need a NT. These guyw are both injury risks. Let them back Shelton up or compete for a DE spot.
Draft plan
1st Danny Shelton
2nd Sammie Coates
Coates is allegedly a physical specimen who is very raw. Give him a chance to learn and grow behind the curret depth chart and he can challenge for a starting spot when hes ready. No rush, and the Niners maintain the dline as a dominant force.

We don't draft for this year as much as we do the next year. We will get that hard to find playmaker on offense at 15 or trade back for a later first and a second. Justin will play his 15th year

Butter--very logical outlook! I've been thinking White at 15 but have also thought Shelton was also reasonable. Depending on whether they pick up a FA DL they may need Shelton more than any other position. They are deep on the DL but if J Smith retires the depth goes down a notch in talent...a big notch. Shelton may or may not make a difference his rookie year but it can't hurt.
The other option--to fill the need on the DL with a FA like Knighton and go after White. Mmm...so may options!

Wait, what? The draft is 7 rounds? I wasnt just using Sammie Coates as an example? Man, this game is complicated...

This is a great point, and the primary reason I was keen on drafting White or Parker. My concern is that while those two are talented, are they elite? Where would they have been drafted last year for example.
The final question for me was is there anyone later in the draft that could develop? I like the idea of Sammie Coates. He kind of reminds me of Vernon Davis. Physical specimen who needs to spend some SERIOUS time after practice with the jugs machine.

Shelton will be the bedrock for the defense for years to come.

So we want to draft NT at 15?? Don't we already have Dorsey and Williams?
Didn't they just re-sign Glen and Williams?

When's the last time you saw SF DEVELOP a WR?? Maybe the new coaching staff will be better, but we haven't develop a WR in a very very long time.
I do like your 1st 2 picks, but I'm on the trade back bandwagon and grab DGB in the late 1st and go DL OL,or CB with those extra picks....at worst DGB would be a red zone threat in his rookie year.

Another way to take DL in the first round, trade for Gordon. Then you get both.

Shelton would play NT, we already have two NT'S. I'd much rather have Kevin White keeping a corner and possibly a safety from moving up into the box than Shelton sharing a position with two other capable players for 30% of defensive snaps. The only way he could play would be if he is playing at Ray Mac's spot, but I don't know if he is fast enough. He's got about 40lbs on Ray Mac.

If the Niners could draft Shelton and DGB, Id be all for it. I have a hunch that someones going to roll the dice on DGB, maybe sooner than we expected.

Yeah I agree...I don't see it happening unless DGB goes in the 2nd.

I agree, but just think of the run stopping power with a monster NT and Dorsey and Williams at DE (if we stay in the 3-4) ...but an intimidating lineman on the roster will add some teeth to the defense

Without J Smith, who on the niners would occupy two linemen regularly? If he retires they need to try and find a guy who can help keep the LBs clean.
