Eddie Goldman - DL - Florida State

I think there are some misconceptions WRT Goldman...primarily that he'd only see action on 1st and 2nd downs. Not true...at least it wasn't true at FSU where he played both DT and DE. His coach, Jumbo Fisher said he was his best DL, and that's quite an endorsement when you consider the caliber of DL FSU's put in the NFL. Goldman's a beast...who could play NT on 1st & 2nd downs, but stay on the field in a hybrid formation. He'd give Tomsula a number of options...and is a guy who'd tie up 2 OL on virtually every snap. We'll lose that when Justin Smith retires...so it makes all the sense in the world to draft a guy who can keep that going and give our pass rushers opportunities to make some big plays.

Thank you

good point, but what NT plays more than that anyway?

Exactly...you could slide Carradine or Dockett inside next to him...collapse the pocket, stuff the run with lots of inside pressure so the OLB's can smash in on the edges. How often did Mangini sub Wilfork in 2005 when he was the DC?

Following Traylor's release, Wilfork had a career-high 54 tackles in 2005 and started all 16 games (second most in his career).

Goldman is too fast not be used for 3 downs. The coaches will figure a way to keep him on the field.

One of the things to consider about Goldman is that we could trade back to 25th to acquire him, gain pick #56 and save $1,162,500 by cutting Ian Williams with only $333,334 in dead money. In short, get a 2-gap starting NT for Mangini (makes the entire 3-4 defense better), gain an additional 2nd rounder, save $1.16M and still have veteran depth with Dorsey behind him (plus Dial if needed). That's great GMing right there!
