You could be right. One small-schooler I really think we should keep an eye out for is WR Tre McBride of William & Mary. Tremendous ST player too and was not shut down when he played high level competition.

So far, I'm not a big Coates fan. He's my 11th ranked WR right now and I give him a 3rd round grade. Very raw, but athletic. Has Pittsburgh Steelers written all over him (cuz ya know they love developing receivers)

This is my fear with Sammie Coates. No way they can justify drafting him in the first. We have a shot to draft an instant starter at receiver. I don't think the 49ers are whiffing on this pick.

I don't see how anyone can draft him in the 1st! I think this WR class is very good (not too far away from last years) and there are plenty of good, proven receivers to be had. I think some team will pick Coates in the Mid-Late second. But these first round projections for him are ridiculous imo
This guy is a playmaker and playmakers should be picked as early as possible.

CBS is ranking him at 40th ovr. For now. Iirc, Beckham jr. was ranked in the same range a year ago.

Nowhere near ODB Jr's talent. Plenty of other playmakers available (Rashad Greene, Ty Montgomery) who are more developed as receivers.
Greene is at 180 pounds. This is way too little for an NFL every-down-WR.

"More developed" does not implicate a high quality. I also think that Coates has got a lot of potential which means that he is still very raw, compared to a guy like Montgomery.

You see I have a hard time looking passed the Matt Jones and Jon Baldwins and the Stephen Hills and the Darrius Heyward-Beys and the Troy Williamsons and the Ted Ginn Juniors and the....well you get my point. Do some raw talents develop into great receivers? Oh sure! But I'll take more proven and developed players over the raw talents with bad hands and a slightly faster 40 time any day

And 180 is too small? Antonio Brown (186, leading the league in receptions and yards and 3rd in touchdown receptions) begs to differ. And TY Hilton (183), Desean Jackson (178), Emmanuel Sanders (180), and Wes Welker (185) say hi

Don't hate the weight
IT's not about track field stars. You act like as if Coates is another Stephen Hill. You've watched the game against Alabama, one of the best defenses in college football? The guy can catch, he can be quick if needed, he can jump high, he can catch under fire.

Ok, I give you the one about the weight.

I think Baalke has learned His lesson and He will address the Lack of speed, i`m pretty sure in this draft Baalke will come through with at least one speed WR that is a Stud, that miss on Odell Beckham has really left a SOUR taste in His Mouth as well as Jed`s also.

I'm sorry, in what universe did the 49ers pass on Beckham?
No they did not try hard enough to move up to get Him,btw I live near St.Louis and I saw the Giants/Rams game and it just hurt to see Him make play after play,H e has 11 tds in 11 games and 1100+ yds man oh man.

What miss? Unless you're cool with not having a first round pick this year as well as others to make that jump. Buffalo paid a premium to move up for Sammy Watkins and they were ALREADY drafting in the top 10.

I like Sammie Coates a lot, but him being so raw is a concern. If we cannot get Kevin White, Coates is probably the next best thing. It would be great if we knew what we had in Patton and Ellington, then we could go for a more unpolished receiver without any real worries. Funny thing is, because of his athletic ability, he might not even be there in the mid teens where we will draft. And in this draft, I am totally against moving up.

I'm all in with you on Phillip Dorsett however. I actually think if Baalke gets either White/Coates and Dorsett, the biggest beneficiaries will be everyone else (Vernon Davis, Anquan Boldin, Stevie Johnson, Patton, Ellington, and our backs). Especially once we hit a few deep balls early in the season for TDs.
I think Beckham was drafted around 13-15 and that would have not taken next year 1st to move up,hell the 9ers had what 13 draft picks and they had like 5-6 picks in the first 3 rounds.

Jesus that's crazy. But still, as we know all too well from the past being a physical freak does not mean you'll be a good NFL player. (Taylor Mays and Vernon Gholston anyone?).

Wasn't Cordarrelle Patterson a playmaker? I remember the hype for him on this board coming out. Being a "playmaker" does not give you a first round grade. Ty Montgomery is another playmaker. Would you pick him in the first?

IMO, first round guys are guys that are either once in a generation types, the dominant player at their position, very few flaws in their game while having elite talent/measureables, or no real faults in their game while posing great talent/measurables, and impact players at positions like QB or pass rusher (the positions that can instantaneously change a team around).

As for Odell Beckham, I honestly do not ever remember him being ranked that low and I'd question any site that did. I always saw him as a mid teen to early 20s first round pick, which is why I had some hope that we could trade up and get him. If he was legitimately in the 40s, which means far outside of the first round, the Giants would've gotten slammed for reaching that much. I don't remember any of that happening.
