How many of last year's draft picks were on the day 1 53 man roster? 4. Reid (and there is no starting job open this year), McDonald (lost Walker didn't replace him with a FA), Lemonier, and Patton. Carradine, Lattimore, Dial, and Moody were on IR ... but they are not on IR any longer. The only starters who left, Whitner, Goodwin, Brown, and Rogers have largely already had their spots taken (Bethea, Martin, Cook), then add in Ian Williams, Darius Fleming, Brandon Lloyd, Michael Crabtree who all were not on the 53 man roster for all or most of the season last year.
So, 4 players made the roster last year and there are a bunch of players already being added this year from the IR. I know it's a little overly simple, but certainly there is not much room to add players to the 53 man roster.
Players who are projected at the moment to be on the 53 and who should not be on the opening day 53 who are currently on the roster (in my opinion):
Frank Gore
Brandon Lloyd
Jon Baldwin
Garrett Celek
Craig Dahl
Adam Snyder
The problem is I think it's very unlikely they all get cut.
