I'll have to check out Carlos Fields. From all the research I've been doing, I've come away extremely unimpressed with the linebacker options this year that are going to be after the 2nd round.
The 49ers are very good at pinpointing outside-inside players, meaning versatile players that have the free-roaming athleticism and instincts to excel in both areas. With Bowman out, I would not be surprised to see Brooks, Skuta, and Wilhoite all split time inside filling the void, because all three have experience there. We have a tremendous amount of disguising we can do with them.
Bowman was an outside linebacker we moved inside and it worked beautifully. I'm sure we could find another, but I don't think we should use a high pick when we have so many pieces that can hold down the fort until Bowman's back. The ones I like the most right now in that late range are: Carlos Fields, Khairi Fortt, and Marquis Flowers.
I wanted to like Khairi Fortt, but from what I've been able to see of him I've been highly disappointed. It looked like he was guessing a lot on run plays, and seemed to spend a lot of time wandering around the field seeming to not know what to with himself and didn't really see the sideline to sideline speed he's supposed to have. Maybe I just saw video of his bad games or something but I was very disappointed.
Not trying to derail your thread too much further but what do you think about James Morris out of Iowa? I was actually watching video of Christian Kirksey but he seemed to jump off the page to me so I watched more cut ups of him and he seems to have a knack for making the big plays. He put up a 4.60 at his pro day and at 6'1" 240 he is the perfect size for our scheme, but he didn't look like he had that type of speed on tape and he doesn't seem to be very highly regarded among internet draft "experts."
But like I said I'll definitely be checking Fields out. You have me intrigued.

Nice mock. I don't really see the 49ers drafting another RB this season. They have done it in the past but last years pick Lattimore was going to be redshirted and not take up a roster space. Sims will need a roster space we just don't have unless we are going to trade or cut 1 of our 4 RB's. We have Gore starting. Hunter is a quality back up averaging over 4 1/2 yds per carry. So is James when we play him also averaging over 4 1/2 yds per carry. Now we have Lattimore to add to that. There just is not roster spot available and even if we traded a back to make room a rookie would get no carries behind the other 3 vets.
It would basically be a 3rd rd pick for a 4th or 5th string player. Better to wait a year to draft a RB.
I'm just following Baalke's historical trends -- plus there is some consideration for the fact that we lost Dixon. Keep in mind of course that this is just a potential strategy. I have one final strategy to suggest, and then I will unveil my final prediction a little before the draft.
Look at what Seattle did with Christine Michael -- they already had Lynch and Turbin. He got no carries, but in this coming year, he's expected to contribute more to keep those two fresh. They keep their roster stacked with talent. I hear what you're saying though. We may not draft an RB that early, but I see the likelihood of a late one (in particular a hybrid RB/FB/STs player like Dixon) getting selected as pretty high later in the draft.
I could see a FB/HB type of player but barring a trade or release of a productive player (Hunter & LMJ), can't see cutting Lattimore unless he retires due to injury, a drafted RB would be 5th string. With the competition for roster spots so big that is not a good use of a 3rd round pick. You never know, there could be a trade coming up but as the roster stands now I can't see it.
Next season Hunter will be a FA and we will know what we have in Lattimore and if Gore will be back again ; and in the current NFL there is no shortage of talented RB's you can get in rounds 3 and 4 so there is no rush. For now we have talent and depth to spare.

Being selfish, I hope they leverage this draft into future draft choices. I would have to have the mid to bottom of this draft not be able to make the squad and then get plucked off our practice squad. I will say that they liked some of the picks so well, that they allowed trades for future picks (Haralson).
WR- I think there are only 3 safe spots and there is room for two new people.
CB - They brought in new blood (and old - Cox) to have more competition, but maybe no real long term solutions. Definitely room for upgrades.
OL/DL - Seemingly no existing openings, but talent slips and becomes available, I think someone will lose their jobs.
S - Stacked 5 deep, but do you still take a shot at a Dixon or Loston?
TE/HB/ST - Heck, they could use a new swiss army knife.

I don't believe we'll get a 2015 2nd round draft pick for a trade down and still select Verrett. Considering we traded a 1st and 3rd to move up and select Reid, I think the trade isn't reasonable.
In terms of the picks, I love Verrett, Moncrief, Turner, Huff, and Marsh.
I think in your previous mock, you had Bryant over Richardson as the speedy WR. I'd perfer him over Richardson - speed and height.
Not a fan of the 3rd round pick RB - I'd draft a guy like Bruce Ellington to replace James. Ellington can play WR, KR, PR, and RB - perfect joker player.

Love the trade down! The second round is so full of talent that this really makes sense...for this year and next! Seems to be some movement with Verrett and some others in the various mocks so I can't quibble...except to say Verrett may not be there. Do you have any back up ideas for the top spots?

BIG fan of trading down!
I really like Montcrief. Not in agreement w/RB in this draft.
From everything I've read this draft is supposed to be really loaded w/talent - especially in the CB & WR category.
So, I think it's smart to get more picks in the 2nd & 3rd rounds.
Also a fan of getting more picks in '15 draft. We have a very good roster at this point.
How many guys in this draft do you think will actually make the team? I'm thinking 4-6.

Getting a 2nd rd pick for this draft would be about right for a #30 pick...possible they could get more, but not another 2nd rd pick for 2015.
Verrett's a no-brainer, at least for me.
No issues w/Moncrief, although I think Matthews projects as a better NFL WR because of his consistent production. That said, I think it's crucial for Baalke to draft both Crabtree's and Boldin's replacements now. I just don't see Richardson replacing either guy. There are other speed guys to provide the deep threat and KR's.
I don't see Baalke drafting Gaines with Breeland (Baalke likes him) & Dontae Johnson out there. FWIW, NFL.com thinks Gaines will be an UDFA.
Not excited about any of the rest, save maybe Huff...you have a RB and OG...I don't see much a need for either, given Harbaugh has Looney, Martin and Seymour for OL depth and a deep backfield. Don't see a QB, either.

Take a look at the kids highlights on YouTube. The guy is a beast and plays a lot like Bowman. Great blitzer with good closing speed, made plays in coverage and the run equally well. Pretty impressive.

What an infusion of speed. Good Lord. Nice job as always OTC. Thanks for unveiling your Carlos Fields. He sounds intriguing.

For a trade down mock, it's definitely covers all the needs. Couple of questions:
- Why Richardson as the speed WR? My guess the Niners would take someone like Ellington or Bryant for size AND speed in the late 2nd or early 3rd.
- Why a RB early and a pass rusher late? I agree that the Niners may take a RB, but the third round seems a little early to me.
Like the late round picks. Good value all the way through.

i love the paul richardson pick. i posted about him in another thread recently. he is the real vertical threat in this draft. this guy accelerates off the line better than anyone in the draft. first person that comes to mind when i see him play is desean jackson as well.
