had this discussion w/ someone....... normally it would be smart for a qb to stay and learn, but in his case, i'm not sure if there's much more for him to learn in that system that will prep him for the NFL game.

I dunno, Mariota was never going to go 1st though, still have Bridgewater as the 1st QB, followed by Hundley, Manziel, Mettenberger, Carr, Boyd....etc.
If Bortles comes out, he leap frogs everyone but Bridgewater and Hundley IMO.
i highly doub hundley applies for the draft too. mora is staying, he still needs to get better, and ucla will be top favorites next year

That thought crossed my mind. That offense is so fundamentally different then a pro style offense. So he may not getting many reps as pocket passer but there's still other things he can work on. Footwork and release to start. Plus he's taking a chance here by staying because he's very likely a 1st rounder. Him staying is a huge asset and boost the team so I'm sure the.coaches are commited to making sure Mariotta benefits from this. Most importantly they need to at least spend 20 snaps a practice letting him run a pro style offense. Too bad Lyerla dipped out. Throwing to TE like that would've been a huge boost.

I'm glad Mariota didn't declare for the draft, now if he slips, 9ers have a good chance.

No im not. Bridgewater has done nothing to lose his ranking as the top QB in this draft. Mariota would have gone earlu, but not the 1st QB off the board.

Stupid move. He isn't going to improve as a qb at oregon and he is passing up sure nfl money. Now when he comes out next year many teams will question his decision making.

NFL money will always be there for Mariota, how much of course will be the question. But I don't think Mariota decided to go back to school to improve as a QB to be more NFL ready. I think he stayed to try once again for a National Championship, he knew he was close.

Sure. That was part of the equation. It appears to be a trend too with Grassu returning, and possibly Thomas.

Actually I think it speaks miles about Mariotta as person. He's dedicated to his team, and being the best player at his position. I don't think it hurts him.

I think he may have been thinking of 1st round and not 1st overall. Bridgewater is clearly the best pocket passer in this years draft, and we all know these teams be thirsty.

Oh whoops I misread your original post, thought you said 1st round in general.

I heard this dude give an interview once and he did not come off sounding like a leader or a franchise qb. But that was the only interview I've seen of his and I am by no means a gm in the nfl.

He's a very shy guy, coaches had to force him to be more assertive in the huddle and be a more vocal leader. Dude's from hawaii, just a super laid-back guy. Doesn't mean he can't be a franchise qb though... that's kinda ridiculous.

lol for real. Mariota is really shy, I heard a lot about cause he is supposedly mormon (correct me if I'm wrong) but that is what I heard cause he supposedly considered BYU and was recruited by my Utes.

He can be shy and over-friendly as much as he wants to but when he is on the field, he should be more agressive.
