Yeah, I agree we need better pass rush. But our starting OLBs are pretty damn good. I don't see how we can improve that position much. Sure, we could have better depth.... but I don't like the idea of using anything higher than a 3rd rounder on a backup.

Looking at our personnel and how we looked in 2011 and early 2012 I think the key to our pass rush is getting pressure from our DE's. McDonald isn't much of a pass rusher. Justin is a monster when he's in top form. But both of those guys are undersized to be battling double teams all day... especially against big passing teams.

To me, it seems a disruptive interior DL that can rotate in with Justin and McDonald would be the key ingredient.

Really? Because both of your 2nd rd picks in your mock would be backups. They would see the field but not as starters.
I wouldnt be angry but I think we're still missing a stud DE. Don't want to rely on vets.

I meant "permanent" backups. Rogers would start as soon as Boldin is gone, maybe sooner depending on how quickly he adapts to the NFL. Vance McDonald would never start as long as VD is here, but he'd fill Walker's role and get about 40-50% of the snaps.

As for an OLB, Brooks is signed through 2017. Aldon will get an extension too. Any OLB we draft probably won't play more than 20-30% of the defensive snaps for the life of his rookie contract. To me, that's not good value for a high draft pick.

That said, perhaps I will do more research on pass rushing specialists that may be available in rounds 3-5.
McDonald's receiving skills aren't "top notch". He actually has consistency problems catching the football.
Seems just about every mock with trades is advocating to trade up in the 1st rd...and I don't think that's the best use of Baalke's 14 picks. No reason to trade away his first two picks...he can get a top DL, S, or TE. The target area to trade into is between picks 20-70 (2nd and part of 3rd rd)...I think you could reasonably extend that window toward the end of the 3rd rd. TB has plenty of picks to get a couple more from that pool. That'd give him 7 picks in the 1st 3 rds...if he can come away with 7 blue-chippers, that's a job very well done. No reason to worry about the rest of his picks, if he'd have any left. If he did, then just draft for PS competition.

I agree that a lot of the talent in this draft will be found in the 2nd round. Plenty of good DBs and WRs in round 2. However, DL is an exception. Because of a lack of top end talent at QB, WR, and RB (positions that usually fill a lot of top 15 picks) the top DL guys will go earlier than usual.

DL that can play in a 3-4 and be disruptive in the passing game:

Shariff Floyd
Star Lotulelli
Sheldon Richardson
Datone Jones
Jonathan Hankins

All of these guys will probably be gone by 31 and it is a huge area of need for us. So I think we need to trade up in the 1st.
