I can't believe I missed it but we had Trent Baalke & Tom Gamble at USC v Stanford in week 3 and they paid particular attention to USC WRs during pre-game drills.

Yep so 2 USC games now, watch them against Stanford and Utah.

Also this is the second week in a row that we've scouted Wyoming.

I have mentioned this before but if Ginn and Moss go I am not going to be surprised at all if we draft a big tall physical wr to go with our speedy quick guys like Manningham, Crabtree, Jenkins and Williams. That's a good group but I don't think we are done for the future. Manningham and Williams are free agents after next season and Crabtree after 2 although we could void his last year. I don't think we are done with WRs. Maybe not early but I think we take at least one.

I dont there were done at all. At the very least we will draft 1 this season and probably look for a FA if Ginn walks. Good lord imagine a WR corp of Crabtree, Manningham, Jenkins, Woods, Williams, rookie/FA - that would be nuts.

Phillip Thomas looked really good against Wyoming, he looked just like Kenny Vaccaro did against Wyoming. I would be very happy with both of these guys, they play a lot like Goldson.

Thats exactly who I figured we were scouting. He is very similar to Goldson, definitely looks like a promising prospect.

So with 2/3s of the college football season over I thought I'd post a synopsis of our most heavily scouted teams.

VaTech - 4 games in 5 weeks
prospects of note

DE/OLB James Gayle
ILB Bruce Taylor
WR Dyrell Roberts
WR Marcus Davis
WR Corey Fuller
CB Antone Exum
CB Kyle Fuller

North Carolina - 3 games
OG Jonathan Cooper
DT Sylvester Williams
ILB Kevin Reddick
OT Brennan Williams
WR Erik Highsmith
OG Travis Bond
K Casey Barth

East Carolina - 2 Games
DT Michael Brooks

Purdue - 2 Games
DT Kawann Short
OG Robert Drey
CB Josh Johnson
CB Ricardo Allen
WR Antavian Edison

CAL - 2 Games
WR Keenan Allen

USC - 2 Games
WR - Robert Woods
OC - Khalid Holmes
FS - TJ McDonald
CB - Nickell Roby
DE/OLB - Devon Kennard
DE/OLB - Wes Horton

BYU - 2 Games
OG - Braden Hansen
DE/OLB - Ziggy Ansah
DE/OLB - Kyle Van Noy
ILB - Brandon Olgetree
WR - Cody Hoffman

Wyoming - 2 Games
C Nick Carlson
WR Chris McNeil
LB Korey Jones
DT Mike Purcell
FS Luke Ruff
DT Kurt Taufa'asau

Arizona State - 2 Games
FS - Keelan Johnson
DE/OLB - Brandon Magee
WR - Jamal Miles

Colorado - 2 Games
TE - Nick Kasa
ILB - Doug Rippy
FS - Ray Polk

I'm treating 1 game scouting trips as cursory visits especially for schools like Utah, Ohio State, Clemson, etc. because they do have big name prospects coming out but we aren't too keen on them or don't need them. In some cases they might be completely accidental, for example we were likely scouting USC C, WRs and FS and happened to be against the Utes, a quality running game from a balanced offense(FS), elite DT(C), WR(marginal DBs lol).

If I missed anyone please let me know and I'll update it.

Here's my list of decent seniors from Wyoming:

C Nick Carlson 6-4 292
WR Chris McNeil 6-1 180
LB Korey Jones 6-2 233
DT Mike Purcell 6-3 303
FS Luke Ruff 5-11 200
DT Kurt Taufa'asau 6-2 284

I've watched almost all of Wyoming's games and I don't see anyone on the team worth looking at other than true sophomore Brett Smith and he's got happy feet after a few concussions this year. But to break down each senior:

Carlson: He'd be an ok UDFA guy and potential practice squad player to develop. I don't know how he would transition from Dave Christensen's gimmick spread offense though.
McNeil: He's consistent for the Cowboys but I don't think he has the size or athleticism to do anything in the NFL.
Jones: He is too small to fit the 49ers system but plays pretty hard. He's bad on special teams.
Purcell: He and Taufa'asau were supposed to make up one of the best interior defensive lines in the Mountain West. I don't see it but these two are probably the guys being scouted.
Taufa'asau: I think Purcell has played better than Taufa'asau but Taufa'asau has been injured a lot this year and is currently wearing a cast on one hand. He's the most likely target for the 49ers as a DE.
Ruff: He's an excellent special teams player and very intelligent. He'd be a less athletic version of Colin Jones who could actually play safety.
Don't we have anyone scouting Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, etc? There are a lot of good players on these teams as well.

Nope, I think our FO just reviews game film of the "big name" prospects on their own and uses in person scouting trips for more intriguing prospects. Also IIRC we tend to scout particular conferences or regions of the country each year. We dont just send scouts to singular big name schools.

Last year, again IIRC, we sent a lot of scouts to the Midwest and to BIG10, BIG12, C-USA and Big East. So far this year we are focusing on the ACC, PAC12, MWC, IA(Independent) schools.

I'm very interested to see if any of the schools from the past couple of weeks get more visits, I do know that according to @ChrisSteuber the guy that finds out where NFL teams scout -- we did not scout Thursdays Clemson v Wake Forest, teams that we've scouted on one occasion each this year.

Week 9 games at this time.....

NC State @ North Carolina
2nd NC State game
4th UNC game: Too many prospects but DT Sylvester Williams, ILB Kevin Reddick, WR Erik Highsmith, OT Brennan Williams, K Casey Bath are the most notable for our needs.

USC @ Arizona
3rd USC game: supposedly we are very keen on Robert Woods, also could be scouting TJ McDonald among others.

Temple @ Pittsburgh
2nd Pittsburgh game

we better not take Highsmith! I'm a UNC fan and this guys SUCKS! supposed to be our #1 this year and he blows hot chunks. Our TE Ebron is a monster though! I've dreamed of having him and VD as our TEs and he would be a great pickup, only a sophomore though

I know right, I was really hoping Highsmith would get it done this season but nooooooo, he drops multiple passes a game.

Next years TE class is going to be great in terms of underclassmen. Austin Sefarian-Jenkins from Washington, Ebron from UNC, Amaro from Texas Tech will be 3 of the top junior TEs IMHO.

Players to watch in todays games:

Arizona
WR Dan Buckner 6'4" 215

USC
WR Robert Woods 6'1" 190
C Khalid Holmes 6'3" 308
S TJ McDonald 6'2" 210
DE/OLB Devon Kennard 6'2" 260
DE/OLB Wes Horton 6'4" 250
----------------------------------------------

NC State
CB David Amerson 6'2" 195
OT RJ Mattes 6'6" 305

UNC
DT Sylvester Williams 6'2" 320
ILB Kevin Reddick 6'2" 240
OT Brennan Williams 6'6" 320
WR Erik Highsmith 6'2" 190
K Casey Barth 5'11" 180
-------------------------------------------

Unfamiliar with Temple-Pittsburgh matchups.

I agree 1000% - this is the biggest hole in our roster/capabilities. I've posted it before and will say it again - all our receivers (WR & TE) are small throwing window guys, not very good outlet guys. We lack the receiver type that can body out a defender and be a safe throw into a big window for a QB. This is key in 3rd down conversions and RZ - key offensive weaknesses for us.
