The trend I see is as follows.
The defense is 90% first round draft picks, in fact the majority is top 15 draft picks.
The offense has several skill and OL positions in the mid rounds.
RT- 3rd round
RG 4th round
WR 3rd round
center 2nd round (low second)
LG0 Low 1st round
qb low 1st round
TE- 3rd round
So for all of the zoners who want to spend a round 1 pick on OL, it is not necessary. You can find good OL rin rounds 3-5. A little harder but can be done.

Bill walsh already stated, you need talent for the D, the Off, you can scheme. Not that you shouldn't use a high round on an Off player, but if the talent is there on D, you grab it. However as the old Maxim goes, BPA. Cause you never know when you get a situation like Freddie Solomon and Rice or Takeo Spikes and Bowman. Or better yet- Brady and the QB he replaced that then got traded (damn getting senile).

Yes, if they had this philosphy in the earlier draft, they would have drafted Earl Thomas FS instead of Anthony Davis. Davis has started from day 1, so I am not compalining, but they could have had several OT's in rounds 2 and 3 that so far are equal to Davis.

you can find good talent anywhere in the draft, you just have to look for it

RT- 3rd round - Great quarterback
RG 4th round - Great quarterback
WR 3rd round - Great quarterback
center 2nd round (low second) - Say what you will but he's having one of the best seasons for a rookie QB ever. Breaking records.
LG - Low 1st round - Great quarterback
qb low 1st round
TE- 3rd round - Great quarterback

I agree that some good OL can be had outside the first round but look at the guys theyre blocking for. Some of the greatest QB's the game has seen with a total of 6 superbowl wins.
Im an Alex supporter but do you think Mike Wallace would be on this list if Alex were throwing to him? Do you think Eric Winston would be on it if we had him instead of Davis? I think thats how you have to look at OL's, a truly great quarterback can make an average OL look great, and just the same a truly great OL can make an average QB look great.

I'm firmly in the camp of drafting D at this point. Nice thread and observation to support that. I'd probably use our first two picks in the secondary.

Isn't Jason Cole the guys who started all that "There's a rat in the organizaton" with coach Sing? Maybe we should thank him because it helped get Sing out and gave us Harbaugh.
