I agree. We have no other "true" center on the team, just gaurds that can play the position. If Goodwin gets injured, we'd have to groom somebody else quickly..unless that's what Mike Persons is for. BUt the CB pool is very deep this year. Get a reciever. Too many guys that are 6'4 and 225 in the draft not to go get one. There's at least 10 corners over 6'0 that will make it all the way all the way to the 4th rd at least. We could snatch a hybrid LB in the 4th cause we just got Smith with the 1st round pick last year. IMO First round pick should go towards a Reciever if the TOP CBs are gone.

Center isnt a big need. Kilgore can easily play Center. Plus hoestly there is no 1st rd Centers scheduled for 2012 draft. The best are Peter Konz(Wisconsin) and Mike Brewster(Ohio State).

It is still earlier, but my initial thoughts are:

Free Safety

Dashon Goldson and Reggie Smith will be free agents next year. I suspect that Dashon Goldson will not be resigned.
We will resign Reggie Smith, but we will still need to get a solid FS in the draft or free agency.

Option: Markelle Martin FS Oklahoma St 6-1 198 4.47

He has defended 7 passes, but has no picks.

OLB

We only have three outside linebacker on the squad—Ahmad Brooks, Parys Haralson, and Aldon Smith and of those,
Brooks, will be a free agent. Resign Brooks and look for one more OLB.

Option: Whitney Mercilus 3-4 OLB Illinois 6-3 262 4.68

He has 11.5 sacks and 16.5 tackles for a loss. Love his name, pronounced merciless, I think.

Wide Receiver

Braylon Edwards, Josh Morgan, and Ted Ginn will be free agents. In my mind, Ginn is more a return specialist than a wide receiver.
Even if we keep all three, we should use at least one high pick on a wide receiver.

Option: Kendall Wright WR Baylor 5-10 190 4.42

We need speed combined with good hands. Wright has 66 catches of 874 yards and 9 scores.

CB

Carlos Rodgers will be a free agent. We should resign him. Having Carlos Rodgers, Tarell Brown and Chris Culliver reduces the need to use a high draft pick on a corner back—reduces, but does not eliminate entirely.

Option: Desmond Trufant CB 15 Washington 6-0 185 4.49

Has good speed. 11 passed defended with two interceptions.

1st round: OG David Decastro Stanford 6-5 312 (gives us a beast RG for the next 8-10 years)
Staley-Iupati-Goodwin-Decastro-Davis (best OLINE in a very long time)

2nd round: CB Casey Hayward Vanderbilt 5-11 190
(gives us a good young CB who is a ballawk and will go well with Brock and Culliver for the future)
Rodgers Spencer Brock Culliver Hayward Brown

3rd round: OLB/DE Chase Thomas Stanford 6-4 240 (Harbaugh guy who gives us good depth at passrusher)
Brooks, Smith, Haralson, and Thomas

So you're saying we don't need a play-making WR? I say we need one in the first two rounds.
This whole question really boils down to who we can get to resign. If we get everyone back like the Op suggests? I think we have to go Best player available every round. For once I think we are solid if not great everywhere. There are no glaring holes, where we are going to be a completely trashed if we dont fill them. If two players are equal on Trents board though...I would be thinking CB first, then WR, O-line, OLB, D-line, QB and Lastly RB, TE and FB in that order.

Now if anybody on the current roster doesnt resign, that postion then will be a position of need and we should be targeting those spots in rounds 1-3 depending on where the hole is.

Might as well draft like 2-3 of those CB's who knows they could be hit or miss. Then we could get rid of tarrell brown. Or move someone to FS, (isn't goldson only here on a 1 yeear deal? What if he wants to walk again? )

Gooden, Swain and Peelle could be retained for competition purposes in camp next year. Plus Peelle and Gooden have looked good thus far. I would put Morgan as a priority along with Ginn. Those 2 should be higher than Braylon for now, since Braylon hasnt been on the field enough.
Why does everyone think so low of Goldston? Ive talked him before and he WANTS TO BE A NINER, so he's not walking. Second, the guy was injured in the first two games, I gaurantee if it was Goldston against Dallas, Miles Austin would not have scored that TD. Goldston hits like a SS and is our tallest DB. Thrird, He had 18 tackles in his first two games back. He does alot for the team so why not resign him. If anybody should be let go, it should be Medieu Williams. not bringin anything to the table..AT ALL..except our ONLY loss against Dallas.
