Then again, I was laughing at NE when they took Logan Mankins in the 1st. Now I wish he was in SF.

Really? I figured it was a pretty good pick at the time. He would've gone with the next selection (to us) if they had taken someone else and we weren't forced to grab Baas.

Back then, Mankins was rated as a late 2nd-3rd round pick, that's why I was like WTF.

I guess I didn't really agree with that rating at the time, with Carpenter though, late 2nd seemed likely.

Honestly, I thought Carpenter was a late 3rd-4th round pick. Seems like this is one of McCloughans Kentwan Balmer picks. IMO, they really fugged up their pick in the 1st round, I think they should've drafted Andy Dalton, Stefen Wisniewski or Jonathan Baldwin. Carpenter wasn't even the next best O-lineman IMO.

Yep, back then Baas was more highly rated by most people. Imagine the uproar we would have seen on here at the time if Mankins would have been our pick. Dudes easily the best guard in the nfl now.

and everything I saw had them both late 1st-early 2nd ratings.

My draft mags had him rated as a 3rd round pick back then.

And that's the point! We "grade" these drafts based on writer draftniks views, when the best scouting departments in the league (such as New England's) have them rated much differently.
That's at least partly why the rich get richer and the bad teams who draft at the top stay bad.
