I doubt Ponder makes out of the first and definitely see no scenario where he's sitting there for us in the 2nd round. In fact, I think Ponder might go before #32 (with a team likely trading up with the Pats at #28 to get him).
I like Dalton, but I don't think he has near the upside of Kap, and we'd only be giving up a 3rd round pick to get someone with a huge amount of potential.
That's a pretty good deal in my eyes.

1st Round for Kaepernick is too high. Bulger doesn't have much left. Leaving us once again bare on the QB front.

Hmm. I don't know about this one Ghost.
Didn't we tender Lawson, meaning he's coming back? (Pending someone else signs him or he refuses to sign the tender and holds out).

i guess so. i haven't heard much about Kaepernick. ive seen a lot of FSU games and i really like ponder so i would rather try and trade to get him, imo. but if harbaugh likes him then im fine with that.

Lawson is outstanding in coverage and he's fast in the run game. People knock him because he isn't an elite pass rusher. But he's good everywhere else and not as bad as made out to be on this board at pass rushing.

We can withdraw the tender if Lawson hasn't signed it, especially after we draft Quinn. I'm also fine if we kept Lawson, but it would be a 1 year tender so that wouldn't preclude us from still drafting a long-term answer at OLB.

Read what Baalke wants out of an OLB: pass rusher who might occasionally drop in coverage. That's not Lawson. This isn't personal, and I don't dislike Lawson; he just doesn't appear to fit what our new GM is looking for in a 3-4 OLB.

So, we have to give up our 2nd and 3rd rounders to get Kaepernick? So, this means that Gabbert, Newton, Locker, Mallet, Ponder, and maybe Dalton go in the first round? That's 4 or 5 QB's in the first round.
If the 49ers want Kaepernick I think he could be had at #45.
When was the last time 5 or even 6 QB's went in the first round?
1999: 5 QB's went (6 in the first 50 picks): Couch, McNabb, Smith, Culpepper, McNown, King went #50.
2003: 4 QB's went: Palmer, Leftwich, Boller and Grossman.
2004: 4 QBs: Manning, Rivers, Roethlisberger, and Losman
So, if what you state happens; this would be the first time in over a decade that the most QBs have been taken in the first round. Heck, maybe ever. I didn't go past 1999.
I am not that high on Kaepernick that I trade my 2nd and 3rd to get him. If 6 QB's go in the top 44 picks, then that just means there is going to be some really good talent falling our way. I believe we can have Kap at #45 or even Stanzi in the 3rd or 4th.
Too expensive for me.

Maybe. But if used correctly IMO Lawson is good. He's just not an elite pass rusher. And you can do much worse than Lawson out there.

I think Lawson is a great SAM in this system. The best case scenario is to keep him while we groom Bowman to replace him, pending a miraculous 2011 season for Lawson. At the WILL position of course, we have no legitimate starter. Brooks and Haralson are situational/rotational guys are best and I don't think Haralson is a fit in the new version of our 3-4.
My hope is we get ourselves a future TED and WILL this year. I want us to target at least two linebackers. I'm a big fan of Mario Harvey and think he could develop into a great WILL, but my gut tells me he won't be one of our picks, despite the fact that he'd be a great fit in Fangio's 3-4. The Patriots, Steelers, and Ravens are the teams who I believe have expressed tremendous interest in him.

Clearly you're not taking into account the current and rare circumstances that teams are facing. There's a very good chance that we go into this year's draft with no free agency, which means teams that don't have a real/legitimate starting QB in place (Carolina, Cincinnati, Arizona, San Francisco, Tennessee, Washington, Minnesota and possibly even Miami) will all be fighting for a rookie QB.
So your history lesson is sort of useless, given this extremely rare situation that teams are facing regarding the most important position on the roster. Teams don't have the luxury of settling their QB situation in free agency prior to the draft, which means there will likely be a bidding war for the few talented rookie QBs available.
So when you say "it's too expensive for you," that's fine...but you will likely be left out in the cold if you think you can just sit around and wait for the QB you want to fall in to your lap in this upcoming draft.
Regarding the QB itself, clearly I'm projecting Harbaugh to have an interest in Kap for a number of reasons, and that many teams will see the upside in this kid (and not just Harbaugh) and want to take him earlier than he's really worth. If you believe what's being reported, this is going to be the case (though we clearly don't know the true value of any of these prospects and won't for some time). Which would mean that if JH wants him, he'll have to go get him.
And again, the real cost would essentially be a 3rd round pick...if you go back and look at the recent history of our 3rd round picks (outside of Frank Gore), you'll not find a treasure trove of talent there. So gambling and really only giving up on "one" pick to get a top-rated QB prospect is definitely worth it, IMO.
