Rank your 3-4 DE's...

I really agree that we shouldn't draft a 3-4 DE, unless there are no CBs or OLBs worth a 7th pick. The only way we move back is if some team makes us an offer we CANNOT refuse.

If we come to 7 and Miller, Peterson and maybe even Amukara (sic) are gone, and no one is offering a really good trade to move up, then we have to go with BPA even if that is a 3-4 DE or a WR.

Do I want the 49ers to have to do this, no. However, it might be time for some to take a reality check.....or do some of you just want to stick your heads in the sand and let the clock tick by.

I think that we need a NT more than a DE, but we do have to look to the future.

In looking to that future, I would suggest that if we can pick up a solid nose tackle, we could move Ricky Jean Francois out to DE. I think he is a natural 3-4 defensive end. He stands 6-3 and his natural weight seems to be just around 300 pounds.

In the draft, the top 3-4 defensive ends (the ones I like the best) are:

1. J.J. Watt DE Wisconsin
2. Muhammad Wilkerson Temple
3. Cameron Jordan California

But we are not going to get one of them unless we pick one of them at #7.
We just do not have a sufficient enough need to draft one of them that early.

The defensive end that I really like later in the draft is

Cedric Thornton DT Southern Arkansas 6' 3" 309

He should easily be available in the 6th round, but depending on the rest of the draft I might be willing to take him in the 5th round--and we could trade up for a second 5th round pick to get him.

Edit: Here is a good article about Thornton. Bill Parcels was impressed-very impressed with his game. Parcels contacted a big time agent and told him to go sign the kid.

JJ Watt is by far the best 3-4 DE.

IMO he would end up being a lot like Justin Smith. Strong, constant motor, hard worker, team player and leader.

Watt's ideal position is 3-4 DE and for his sake I hope he doesn't get drafted to play DT. He's going to be a good player for someone. He just seems like hard worker that's going to get better every year.

Dareus though, he's the head of this DE class. His power gives him a big advantage, IMO. Plus, he's just more polished coming out.
Marcell Dareus Alabama
Nick Fairley Auburn
Cameron Jordan Cal
J.J. Watt Wisconsin
Corey Luiget Illinois
Muhammad Wilkerson Temple
Cameron Heyward Ohio State
Allen Bailey Miami
Christian Ballard Iowa
Jarvis Jenkins Clemson
Lawrence Guy Arizona State
Brandon Bair Oregon
Cedric Thornton Southern Arkansas
John Graves Virginia Tech
1. JJ Watt
2. Marcel Dareus (better as a 3-4 NT or 4-3 DT)
3. Cam Heyward
4. Cam Jordan
5. Muhammad Wilkerson
6. Nick Fairley
7. Jarvis Jenkins
8. Lawrence Guy
9. Christian Ballard
10. Allen Bailey

I'm a little surprised you don't have Jordan above Heyward.
