In 2011 it’s likely that the draft will take place before any free agency movement. If that’s so we won’t have the opportunity to deal 2011 picks for a legit QB prospect. But we do have exclusive negotiating rights with players currently on our roster until the current league year expires. I think we should retain the following players:
Pre-draft contract extensions:
David Baas OC/OG
Baas played well after replacing Heitmann. He must be brought back.
Ray McDonald DE
After getting his knees healthy he’s been a solid contributor to the DE rotation.
Brian Westbrook RB
I think he can be persuaded to return. He’s got more WCO experience than any offensive player we have.
Takeo Spikes ILB
I don’t think Bowman is ready and Spikes is a valuable team leader.
Travis LaBoy OLB
He was our most active pass rusher in 2010. LaBoy on a one year deal would be a valuable asset.
2011 Draft
1) Carolina: Nick Fairly DT - Auburn
2) Denver: Marcell Dareus DT - Alabama
3) Buffalo: Da'Quan Bowers DE/OLB – Clemson
4) Cincy: Patrick Peterson CB - LSU
5) Arizona: Von Miller OLB - Texas A&M
6) Cleveland: Robert Quinn OLB/DE – North Carolina
New England trades-up for A.J. Green WR – Georgia. In exchange for #7 we receive #17 and #33.
1st - #17(NE) – Aldon Smith OLB/DE – Missouri: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1679141
I’ve seen him anywhere from top 10 to mid 20’s. I think his limited body of work could push him down into the middle of the 1st round. He’s a physical freak who will take time to develop but should pay off as a huge steal.
2nd - #33(NE) – Phil Taylor DT – Baylor: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1117626
Taylor immediately adds size, speed and aggression to an already solid DE/NT rotation.
2nd - #45 – Aaron Williams CB – Texas: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1632499
There should be multiple solid CB’s available in this slot. Aaron Williams, Davon House or Brandon Burton would be solid selections here.
3rd - #76 – Danny Watkins OG – Baylor: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1664030
In spite of ProFootBallfocus.com’s appointment of Chilo to the All NFC West team, the words “Chilo Rachal” and “one of the best in the NFL” shouldn’t be in the same sentence. Watkins or Ben Ijalana of Villanova would provide some additional competition in Chilo’s contract year and probably supplant him.
4th - #107 – Andy Dalton QB – TCU: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1125961
Our rookie QB will need to be in a position to sit and learn behind a free agent, preferably with WCO experience. Dalton or Devlin should be an option here.
4th - #114 – Henry Hynoski FB – Pittsburgh: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1243179
He’s Mike Alstott re-born. He’s big enough to blow holes open and athletic enough to add a dimension catching passes out of the backfield.
5th - #138 – Tim Barnes OC – Missouri: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1123309
With Heitmann’s uncertain health status we need some youth at center. Hopefully Baalke can do better than the Cody Wallace debacle.
6th - #169 – Alex Henery PK – Nebraska: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1123569
6th - #190 – Eddie Jones OLB/DE - Texas: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1123378
7th - #199 – Cortez Allen CB – The Citadel: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1723664
7th - #200 – Anthony Allen RB – Georgia Tech: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1630295
After a new labor agreement is reached we party like it’s 2007 with some significant signings:
UFA Signings
Paul Soliai NT/DE – Dolphins
He’s developed into an outstanding run-stuffer in Miami’s 3-4. We steal Soliai from Nolan and he can have Franklin back. And no I don’t think drafting Phillip Taylor then signing Soliai is overkill. The more beef the better.
Richard Marshall CB – Panthers
The Fresno State alum is a solid cover corner. He’s a Cali native and his agent is Drew Rosenhaus who has a very good relationship with the 49er brass. The odds of us landing Nnamdi are long. Marshall would be a sweet consolation.
Dashon Goldson FS/SS – 49ers
I think we re-sign Goldson, but not until he tests the market. Unless McCloughan has a hard-on for him I think he’ll comes running home to the 49ers for a reasonable number. He’s not a Pro-Bowler but he’s better than most of the options on the free agent market and in the draft. Dawan Landry could also be an option if Goldson walks.
Jacoby Jones WR – Texans
He’s definitely good enough to be a #3 and probably seriously push Morgan for #2. He also has experience in the Gary Kubiak variant of the WCO.
Seneca Wallace QB – Browns
He’s played several seasons in the WCO and would be a solid #2 QB. I always thought he was underrated in Seattle, even for a back-up.
TRADE
Kevin Kolb QB – Philadelphia: We trade our 2012 2nd and 3rd round draft picks to Philadelphia for Kolb. We’re going to have to pay to continue this experiment beyond 2011 so we’ll need to offer Kolb a fairly lucrative contract extension.
2011 Roster
Offense
WR: Michael Crabtree / Josh Morgan / Jacoby Jones / Ted Ginn / Kyle Williams
TE: Vernon Davis / Delanie Walker / Nate Byham
LT: Joe Staley / Adam Snyder
LG: Mark Iupati
OC: David Baas / Tim Barnes
RG: Chilo Rachal / Danny Watkins
RT: Anthony Davis / Alex Boone
QB: Kevin Kolb / Seneca Wallace / Andy Dalton
RB: Frank Gore / Anthony Dixon / Brian Westbrook / Anthony Allen
FB: Henry Hynoski
Defense
DE: Justin Smith / Ray McDonald
NT: Paul Soliai
UT: Isaac Sopoaga / Phillip Taylor / Ricky Jean-Francios
OLB: Parys Haralson / Ahmad Brooks / Aldon Smith / Eddie Jones / Travis LaBoy
ILB: Patrick Willis / Navorro Bowman / Scott McKillop / Takeo Spikes
CB: Richard Marshall / Shawntae Spencer / Tarell Brown / Philip Adams / Aaron Williams / Cortez Allen
S: Dashon Goldson / Reggie Smith / Curtis Taylor / Taylor Mays

Not bad but westbrook is gone to a team with a worse rb so he can actually get some playing time.
No way we get seneca wallace
im pretty sure we do not trade with ne for their two first rounders....balke may stay put for a lot better talent
no way we get that cb from carolina....if we dont draft a cb then we will have to go hard after a good cb...champ nmandi or carr.
No way on jacoby jones....we have enough number 2's and 3's at wr.
Not another nose tackle when we have franklin and rjf
Besides that pretty good

id kinda rather have (if there is such a thing from college to pro) a proven commodity rather than take a risk with our first round pick. im not completely sold on aldon smith
-i know you have us resigning westbrook but we really need to get younger at rb...gore is on last year of deal and westbrook would only get a 1 year contract as well probably...dixon isnt the long term answer just yet so id rather get someone else earlier
-chilo is pretty damn bad but idk if i want to use a 3rd round pick for a guard because we probably have the most expensive line as it is (pick wise) right now...i think better play by davis will help chilo and consistency at C will help as well.
otherwise i do like the mock....jacoby jones would be pretty solid and marshall would be a good FA pick too

Obviously this is just for fun, but when's the last time a talent like A.J. Green was within their reach to trade up?

If the draft went like that, I'd want Blaine Gabbert. This isn't a bad mock, just think way too much focus is on the defense.

Special Teams
PK: Alex Henery
P: Andy Lee
LS: Brian Jennings
I don't like it, here we let Franklin go and keep Rachal? Franklin is a very good DT and should be given a 3-4 year deal. Rachal MUST be replaced, he sucks. Baalke basically tipped his hand when he had glowing things to say about the rest of the OL and didn't even mention Rachal just said the RG is still young.
I want a star at #7 I don't really care if it's a CB or DB/OLB as long as we get a star that can make plays around our great run D.

I actually wouldn't expect that to last long

Well, Rachal is under contract and Franklin isn't. I expect 2011 to be Rachal's last season on the roster.
