Very long legs makes changing direction very hard. Not likely olb candidate.

Ware has the same build.

Harbaugh actually said in his interview that Smith had a very good change of direction.

Yes, you don't normally see that with longer legs. On one play, he was moving straight up field but he planted and did a near 90 degree to the QB like a WR doing a square in: Impressive.

Damn Ghost great posts. Sounds like JPP with a motor and desire. Hopefully he pans out. Took some balls to make that selection at #7.

When I said these things, Smith was around 255ish, but he really bulked up and is likely to get even bigger over the years with little problem. That might make him less of a fit as a pure 3-4 OLB and more of a flex guy along the line (standing up from the edge, 3-point stance in a 4-3 and even inside as a 3-technique in a nickel.

The elephant position is back! Drafting a 3-4 OLB that played inside and outside and made plays at both spots should really help him in the NFL. Should be fun to see how Vic uses him.

Whoever said that original long legs comment has never watched his film, or only the games after he initially broke his leg. His change of direction is phenomenal. Martinez of NB made defenses look silly with his running ability and yet Aldon Smith tracks him down no problem in open space, check out 0:40 and the next play.

That's another thing: dude shows good instinct of where the ball is headed.

Don't be surprised if they take another OLB on day 3. The Smith pick was definitely a surprise but not a total shock. The pick was going to be either a CB or a pass rusher, so they got what they wanted. The thing that stood out to me on some of his highlight reels is that he lined up inside on some obvious passing downs and was able to generate pressure up the middle. That flexibility will serve the Niners well in Fangio's version of the 3-4.

Aldon inside, with JSmith outside, or vice versa, or used with stunt's...this is going to be a big problem for opposing teams. Aldon is going to have the effect of turning JSmith into JSmith on steroids.

This could be a match made in heaven...total synergistic effect on each other. I am really liking this pick....this defense takes off if we have someone who can complement JSmith.
