49ers should get Defensive in 2011 Draft

I'm always seeking improvements in the 49er.

Offense looks good so does depth. Quarterback play has improved and so has line play. Might still need to draft an heir apparent.

Defense

Corner back
I new Nate Clemens would come back in better shape and mind.Spenser good Tarell;Good seems to be adequate size and depth at 2nd string

Linebackers
Finally we have enough LB's to play the 3-4 Looking forward to the Laboy Briggs winner. Hope we keep them both.

Defesive line
Kentwan Balmers departure rob us of large wide body player. Were a little light in the second string unit. With Aubrey's one year franchise tag there is uncertainty on the front line for next year. My moneys on the 49ers looking at two DE 6'5 300' and NT 6'4 325

If there is #1 receiver that falls into our laps in the first round It would be considered, because until one other receiver produces in the season not named Crabtree we still may be thin.

Wheres your money on next years draft?

i would like a better pass rusher but of course we should wait till the season starts and ends before we discuss this
Disagree

The offense could use upgrades for starters or backups in nearly every position. We probably are set at guard although RG may need a starter. OT probably set everywhere but starting RT. C has injury issues at both starter and backup right now. TE needs a backup/starter blocking TE and Delanie Walker (big fan) really has not developed into a weapon. WR is probably set at one starter, the rest have not proven anything yet. QB we have 3 players with potential but no results. RB we have one starter and one rent a player. FB could use an upgrade, nothing special here. We also need role players for 3rd down both WR and RB.

I just don't see any offensive position that we could pass on for defensive need.
For starters we have a lot of free agents next year. Lawson, Goldson, Franklin, Davis, Smith, McDonald, Spikes, Baas and a few others. I think who we lose of the bunch is going to be a factor in who we draft. If we franchise tag one we could probably sign all but one or two of those guys. Baas, Spikes and McDonald should be cheaper. We might be able to let Franklin and Lawson go with the emergence of RJF, LaBoy, Briggs, and Brooks.

I see us signing all but Lawson and Franklin. Possibly Smith if he doesn't do well.
I'd say biggest need is CB is probably the only need I think will be a safe bet. We probably have replacements for OLB (Brooks), FS (R. Smith), NT (RJF), TED (Bowman). Those replacements probably won't be as good but at least we have decent replacements. I think we sign Vernon Davis for sure.

Bottom line is it depends on who we resign out of all those free agents and which replacements we have confidence in. If we would resign all of them (don't think it's possible) I would say go CB and then BPA all the way through. Maybe draft some backups or future replacements.

Edit: here is the list
This scares the crap out of me... we can't keep all these guys

Alex Smith - Depends on the season but hopefully he resigns cheap if we want him
Vernon Davis - Should be signed first and foremost
Dashon Goldson - I'd prefer to resign him, Reggie has looked good but injury prone
Aubrayo Franklin - I think he goes elsewhere, hopefully RJF will be ready
Manny Lawson - If he doesn't lower demand he is probably gone
Ray McDonald - Sign for cheap... should compete with Soap for LDE
Takeo Spikes - Sign for vet min. as leader for Bowman, possibly starter

David Baas - Unless we see him as future at C no need to resign
Tony Wragge - Versatile vet but unless he signs for min. we probably can't resign
Karl Paymah - Could live without resigning... we will see how he does this year
Demetric Evans - Probably gone after this year
Brian Westbrook - Probably gone after this year... Dixon should be ready
Barry Sims - Probably gone or just let walk
Jason Hill - Probably gone anyways

I actually agree with this. It does look like we may have some significant turnover on defense in the next 2-3 years so if we can groom some replacements starting next year it would help keep the defense competitive.

Guys whos contracts end in 2010 and 2011:

SS/CB Reggie Smith
FS Dashon Goldson
ILB Takeo Spikes
OLB Ahmad Brooks
DE Ray McDonald
NT Aubrayo Franklin
DE Demetric Evans
OLB Manny Lawson

Plus Michael Lewis is getting old and if I recall correctly Nate Clements contract is very back-loaded and he will probably be cut before 2013.

Obviously we will re-sign some of these guys but I can't see us using a high pick (1-2rd) on offense next year unless we need a QB to replace Smith, Dixon doesn't play well at RB, or a can't miss WR is on the board. We could really use help on the D-line, another DE-OLB pass rusher, and another quality CB.
The defense is already pretty good. Plus we need a #2 WR, another RB (Gore won't last forever), Center, and maybe QB depending on how things turn out but I hope not.

we def dont need a Center we have Heitman and Baas
i gotta agree, Defense is the way.

Guys who are long term solutions IMO.

RB 21 Frank Gore, RB 33 Anthony Dixon, WR 15 Michael Crabtree, TE 85 Vernon Davis, TE 46 Delanie Walker, LT 74 Joe Staley, RT 76 Anthony Davis, LG 77 Mike Iupati, DE 94 Justin Smith, DE 91 Ray McDonald, NT 92 Aubrayo Franklin(If he wants to be here), NT 95 Ricky Jean-Francois, ILB 52 Patrick Willis, ILB 53 Navorro Bowman, OOLB 55 Ahmad Brooks, OLB 50 Diyral Briggs, CB 22 Nate Clements(Still a supporter of his), CB 36 Shawntae Spencer, CB 25 Tarell Brown, FS 38 Dashon Goldson, SS 23 Taylor Mays, FS 30 Reggie Smith, P 4 Andy Lee, LS 86 Brian Jennings

I count a total of 24 players who would be signed long term. Plus add in our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rd picks in 2011.

Guys with a shot at being long term.

QB 11 Alex Smith(Needs big yr), QB 7 Nate Davis, WR/RS 19 Ted Ginn Jr., WR 84 Josh Morgan, WR 17 Dominique Zeigler, WR/RS 10 Kyle Williams, TE/FB 82 Nate Byham, C 64 David Baas, RG 62 Chilo Rachal, DE 90 Isaac Sopoaga, OLB 99 Manny Lawson(If he has a big yr), OLB 98 Parys Haralson(Needs to show something in 2010), ILB 56 Scott McKillop(Needs to come back strong after torn acl), CB 35 Phillip Adams, FS 28 Curtis Taylor, ST 24 Michael Robinson

Thats a total of 16 players. Of those, Williams, Byham and Adams are signed thru 2013, and Robinson, Haralson, Taylor & McKillop 2012, the rest are either 2010 or 2011.

Guys who will retire soon.

ILB 51 Takeo Spikes, SS 32 Michael Lewis, PK 6 Joe Nedney

Guys with something to prove to stick.

QB 5 David Carr, DE 93 Demetric Evans, ILB 57 Matt Wilhelm, CB 31 William James, CB 41 Karl Paymah

I left off Miller and Caulcrick, cause i dont know which if either makes the 2010 team.

please let me know if i missed anyone.

Heitman is hurt a lot. And so is Baas who is injured every year.

Baas isn't signed past this season and Heitmann will be a free agent after next season. I think next year wouldn't be a bad time to target a center to play under Heitmann for a season.

As of right now IMO I would draft this way:

1st - CB

2nd - QB - Not sold on Carr or Davis and Smith right now is a question mark.

3rd - NT

4th - OLB or ILB best available LB

4th - DT/DE

5th - FB

6th - CB

6th - WR

7th - Best available O-lineman

7th - KR/PR
BPA at postions of greatest need will be the model. And until the end of this season, I can't say where our greatest area of need will be. Sure, I can project, but by season's end, that might look silly.
Anybody else feel like CB and a pass rush have been an issue for like 10 years now?

we will keep Vernon, Dashon, And manny. David Bass, and maybe Ray Mac, everyone else I think will go. Especially if smith doesn't play well....this could be his last season with us.
