I don't understand this logic: if he can't cover then at least he will be hitting people.
Don't you feel that if he can't cover then he won't really be in position to make a hit. It's usually more difficult to time a nice hit than it is to bat a ball down.

Like..
and apparently 87% of the voters on here like the pick... To my recollection, there were a bunch of Mays haters before the draft, and still after the draft, but the votes tell differently.

It's slow so I will chime in again with a different take...
Let's view this player as simply a resource that needs development, serious development in certain areas. Well, can he be developed? Will he accept, practice and develop those coverage skills: change of direction in motion (hips and trunk), staying low at all times (knees, hips and trunk), and tackling (focus, arms, and technique).
My point in all this is that he CAN, not that he won't. He has the ability to overcome this deficiencies in his game like Vernon did with his hands and route running, blocking was never an issue, huh?
So why can't Mays do the same? As I posted earlier on MadDog's comments, he can focus on those areas (hips, trunk, focused closure, arm technique to wrap) with relentless practicing. The body is an amazing thing in that it can be developed in ways we didn't think possible.
For example, I really didn't think Vernon would be able to routinely catch the ball. I accepted the fact that he would make some great plays, but was resigned at the fact that he would never be elite. Well, he slapped my face and said, "SEE! I can do it!!!" He sure did last year.
OK...so it took him four years to get to elite status. That's OK. If it takes Mays those same four years or sooner, so be it. We will see him develop before our very eyes and he will become a force on our defense for years to come.
I still believe that this is the type of steal that mirrors what happened to Singletary when he came out. A first round talent with the fire to prove everyone wrong.
He just may do it. Stay tuned...

Hopefully Michael Lewis is healthy all season so Mays can watch and learn how to play the SS position from a proven veteran...that way he can get a few snaps and ease into the defensive scheme, throwing him into the fire from day one could backfire and the speed of the game could hyptnotize this young fella and destroy his confidence, hopefully he starts the season out as a reserve and given more time as the season goes on.
BUT
if he's a beast from day one, then maybe he will get more playing time and be an immediate upgrade at SS and be the steal of the draft ......this is what I am hoping for

At first I did not like the pick because of the varying reports I heard on his 40 time. Also, it seems Mays played a lot slower at SC than his talent/potential indicated. That said, I do like his upside and raw athletic skills, so I'm eager to see what he develops into 2-3 years from now.
Long story short: I'm leaning more towards liking this pick than disliking.

I don't mean to single you out Fred, but this type of attitude is fair weather.
What is it about Mays that leads you to believe he won't do well? Why would you dislike the pick, when you haven't seen him play a down in the NFL?
It's perfectly fine to see the value in the pick and hope he does well. You know, like a genuine fan.

fair weather?????? i hated the way he played in college and thats enough for me to say i dislike the pick. dont get me wrong i want him to succeed and become the best ss in the league being that hes on our team and we picked him in the 2nd. but ive stated over and over again his lack of ball skills upset me. im not gonna be like a few here and say just cuz hes a 9er now im happy and suppose to love the pick when i really dont unless like i said he proves me wrong

I agree completely with you. I saw him play most of his college career and saw him play in person twice. I was not impressed with his attitude or play on the field. I hope he turns it around and becomes a great 49er but there was just SO much to hate about his college career.

Taylor Mays actually should of been the 17th pick. This kid will be in the running for rookie of the year if we use him correctly. Also it helps that he's humble from an outstanding famliy and is HUNGRY to prove something.
