Like. But you should check back in a year or so and make an identical poll.

I didn't really like it at the time but I'm warming up to it.

I like it now after thinking it over a few days now. I was pissed on Friday. But to know that last year, some in the Zone wanted us to take Mays with our FIRST, (dont lie), it seems we got value and to me with Brooks hopefully becoming a threat in the rush, Mays will be able to read his side of the field and adjust. I mean dang, he as fast as Chris Johnson and we all wanted speed on this D.
So I like it

If he learns to wrap up and tackle he's going to be a badass motherf**ker. IF.

In the games I saw him play I was mostly unimpressed. If we took him at #17 I might have cried. But his game is in the physical mold needed to play safety in Manusky's 3-4 . . . and I like that he has a major chip on his shoulder. I think he'll be a mad man on the kick coverage teams as a rookie.
At #49 I don't hate the pick.

strongly dislike. we passed a lot of good CBs which we need more than a skinny linebaker who can't cover.

2nd round taking over for M. Lewis, its a good pick. He fits in right at SS. If we wanted him to be a FS, then this would have been a lousy pick, even at 49. At least he's got speed.

Taylor Mays (from NFL.com)
Pick Analysis: The 49ers land one of the best athletes in the draft in the middle of the second round with the selection of Taylor Mays. The Southern California standout blazed pre-draft workouts, and was regarded as a top-20 talent in some war rooms. Though he has some deficiencies in coverage; his size, speed and athleticism should upgrade a 49ers' secondary that needs a difference-maker in the middle of the field.
Strengths
A physical specimen with a freakish combination of size, speed and athleticism. Tracks the ball-carrier well, fills fast and delivers good shots. Effective center fielder who uses his elite closing speed and agility to make plays all over the field. Special athlete who can play multiple positions and in different schemes at the next level.
Weaknesses
Does not always take proper angles, which mitigates his great speed. Over-aggressive at times, as he prefers to land a big hit over playing the ball in pass coverage. Technique is sloppy, which may give him trouble in coverage against better athletes at the next level. There are concerns about his passion for the game and his overall maturity.
Works for me.

Mays will be as good as his coaching.
With that kind of talent, you can teach a guy technique.

I don't know how to feel about Mays. All that athleticism, yet seems like a project.

Whoever wanted Nate Allen must be kidding me, the guy is good at coverage but his physical skills would be a split between Mark Roman and Michael Lewis, the guy was horrible at tackling guys bigger than him (not a good sign for the NFL).
I think Mays' issues can be fixed cause people are forgetting that Dashon Gholdson had the SAME sort of problems coming out of UoW before we drafted him (hit-and-miss coverage guy with questionable instincts). -Our DB coaches are amazing and Mays is a hardcore player that will do whatever it takes to BE THE BEST!
Fate has made its mark upon us, deal with it. We used our #49 pick on a guy with tons of relative connections to this team (not to mention it's history), it's going to be interesting.

Mays isn't exactly what you call a tackler, more of a hitter or torpedo. It works at the college level but he better learn to wrap up at this level. Coaching is the only thing that can make this kid. If he is as coachable as I've heard he is then he should be a great starter for us.

At this point, he is a C+ pick.
The team needed a cover safety - a must in this pass oriented league. They chose not to move up to get Nate Allen, not that they had the opportunity and turned it down. That isn't Mays' fault. Mays does have some flexibility and agility questions that will only be answered with PT.
Here is why I rate this higher than some: Goldson does NOT have a SS body. He is a FS with strong hitting instincts. That is a good thing but I don't believe he can stand the grind of SS. The fact the FO DIDN'T move up indicates they believe he can be the cover FREE SAFETY they need. He made mistakes last year but also showed good promise. Mays will allow DG to focus on cover skills and play calling where he should be a better player than last year.
That leaves Mays at SS, where his physical package is very good. Still, he should be able to cover TEs well if he gets quality coaching.
I am not convinced the '9ers have high quality secondary coaches. There has been too much talent come through in the last 4 years with none of them other than Goldson doing much - and Goldson has just been average. If Lott actually does become involved in coaching Mays, he may help some of the others but I am not counting on that.
So yes, C+ is where I see him now.

with Clements back Goldson returning and Mr Mays with one foot in the door i truly see us as having the hardest hitting DBs in the league.
