This is post number 1,500 for 49oz2superbowl.
One thing to keep in mind... there's a solid number of cb's that we're clamoring for that will likely go undrafted. If we enter UDFA with only 5 cb's we can land the best UDFA cb's... players choose places they can start

Warren, Blount, Washington or Vann should be our 7th round pick

Byham only caught 10 passes last year at Pitt.....good blocker, but didn't we have Billy Bajema who couldn't catch and proceeded to get rid of him? Seems repetitive to me.
We don't need a TE who can catch. We need a blocking TE.
I understand that, that's not the point. I'm just saying we got rid of one blocking tight end for another and tried to draft another last year. I agree we struggle with short yardage situations, but that had more to do with the lack of push on the o-line. I would think that the drafting of Iupati would mitigate that to an extent. My only question is who's going to be the 3rd corner? It's not realistic to expect a 6th round pick to be an all world player, but IMO corner was a greater need than blocking tight end. Its all nitpicking at this point, guess this means Dre Bly will be back.
You answered your own question. The 49ers obviously did not see value at the CB position and 6th round CBs are very unlikely to contribute.
Sorry, I don't see a problem drafting a player who is going to see the field in situation spots on this team. I can't dislike it.
And I know that the obligatory 6th round TE thing is pretty funny and true, but the old regime was making those picks.
My only problem is that whereas other teams are getting better, we're making up for past mistakes. Iupati excellent player, but he's making up for the mistake of Bass and Rachal. Mays, fits what we want to do at SS, but he's making up for the mistake of Reggie Smith. There's no spot for him anymore. Bowman making up for the mistake pick of McKillop. MD argued that Dixon is making up for the mistake of Coffee. And now Bymah is making up for the mistakes of guys like Bajema (already gone I know) and Pascoe. There's too much repetition. I know we have an identity, but you can't just replace players you don't like, especially ones you drafted only 2-3 years ago. I know that was Mcclueless, but there's a lot of wasted picks in the past drafts that we've attempted to make up for.
I don't see how filling needs ISN'T making your team better, but that's just me.
we still need a dt as franklin;s on a 1 year deal, still need 2 corners, still need an olb to replace lawson, still need another returner, still need that franchise qb. I see how we've gotten better on the o-lline, but nowhere else.
You're really nitpicking. We just got 2-3 starters from this draft but you're upset that we haven't drafted backups for starters that we already have?
There are only 7 rounds in a draft - not 20, you can't address every "little" problem.
These aren't "little" problems. I'm aware there are not 20 rounds. If they had drafted better before, they wouldn't need to readdress the same needs they've been addressing for the last 5 years. Take the Bill Walsh philosophy better to replace a guy a year early than a year too late. Let's say we make the playoffs this year, but we're back at square one after. There are too many guys who we still have to replace. Franklin's on a one year deal, we need an OLB, a qb, two more corners. I would've have just approached this draft in another manner, that's all. I don't disagree with the pick of Davis at all. Iupati i'm less enthused with. Bowman doesn't fit at all. Dixon's good, but we drafted Coffee for that last year. Its just too much repetition. We're fulfilling the same needs year after year. That's not good drafting. We've been doing well in the first couple rounds, but the middle rounds have been killing us and will continue to do so. With the state of the franchise, we can't pay everybody. It's best to replace those guys with young guys who come on the cheap. In rounds 4-7 you're hoping you hit on somebody. We hit on Goldson a few years back and he's a quality starter, before that it was Haralson in the fifth. I don't see one starter out of any of these guys this year and for that matter I don't see a real contributor. Bymah yeah he can block, but he's not going to suit up for every game. When I see teams trading 5th round picks for real football players Washington, Holmes, Scheffler. It makes me wonder why we can't do the same thing and be more proactive. Yeah we got Ginn for a 5th that's great, but he's not a full time player as a special teamer. My point is we constantly miss on the later rounds and it comes at the expense of getting better and we address the same needs year after year.
not only this statement, you lost all credibility, but you have contradicted yourself in this whole paragraph. You question why we cant hit on late picks....then you go on to point out Goldson, and Harrelson. You question why we cant make a move like the trades that happened to today, then you quote the Ginn trade. Hello?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Bowman fits perfectly as a TED or MIKE. Are you paying attention here?

I love it, actually. Those are really the kinds of little things that will help a team get from 8 wins to 10 or 11 wins.

Only thing i change about this draft is take Brondon Ghee over Bowman in the 3rd i think that would have been a better fit as well as fit a need.

I had Williams as a mid-late 5th rounder at 154th overall, so he went later than I thought. I think he presents great value. He is one one the ten fastest guys in the draft, and can return punts.
Insurance for Ginn, and a smallish slot guy in a four WR set.

The Bowman pick doesn't make sense to me, for this club. Even Singletary had a difficult time explaining where he will play next year in the press conference last night.

Not inspiring considering all of our other needs. I am a bit worried about how we deal with Franklin's and Clement's departures after this season since we have noone to groom to take over now (Balmer and Brown are NOT the answer). I love the physicality of our new guys, but if you hit a guy hard after a 30 yd gain he STILL gets the 30 yds--know what I mean??

Not that it matters, but will Madden give him speed in the 90's?

Agreed... What would you have done in the third?

I hit on Mickey Shuler at 214. That is funny. Like hitting the lottery at this point of the draft.

CB and OLB were not addressed. Those are our two biggest needs now. Can't realy expect anything from 6th and 7th rounds and UFA's.
