MadDog's Final Big Board: The Big 255

Man, I hope you are right. Even we get three of those first four picks (especially Bulaga, E. Thomas and C. Thomas), I'd be thrilled beyond belief.

And even if it goes a slightly different way, if your draft order is even CLOSE to correct, we should have some excellent options, with hopefully many of the potential pitfalls being either long gone, or way off the charts as bad "value" picks so we can avoid falling into some of those traps.

But more and more, it's looking like some combo of a good OT and either E. Thomas or J. Haden will be there for us, and that would be an excellent first round.

Because this is a solid draft, we are going to draft two players who will help the team this year (Jimmy Clausen would not be one of them). Hopefully, one of the better OT's will fall into our laps at number 13, and we can close the door on this ongoing disaster. Won't that be nice?

Look for the Niners to be a 50-50 shot at moving down from their 17th if they get an OT at 13. A lot of teams want to move up into that area.
That is the way I see it as well. Getting their guy for RT at 13 is the key to the entire draft. IF they get that guy, they can go BPA for the best quality available, and that might well allow them to pick up an extra 3rd round pick.

BPA is still a good strategy for the 49ers. They have decent, not great, talent at a number of spots where BPA could be an upgrade, either as a starter or depth. Hence, guys like Baas, Clements, Sopoaga, McDonald, could lose their spot if the right guy fell to the 49ers.

I don't see them moving back with both 13 and 17 but I would not be at all surprised to see this draft just blow up in terms of form. There are SO many players of similar value spread throughout the upper 30% that whether you pick 25 of 35 will not make a great deal of difference in terms of value.

As you, I also look forward to the draft each year. However, this one has an extra attraction for me, not just because of the new format, although I like that, but also because of the depth at so many positions. It could get pretty wild between now and midnight Friday.

The format is a blast. So much for the old days, when I would drive from Philly on Friday at midnight, the night before, to stand in line in New York City.

Merry Christmas to all, in a few hours. It's the Big Boy Holiday Season, so send your wives and children to the mall, bring the extra TV into the computer room, and bring it on this weekend. Are you ready for some football?????

I will be around from Picks 8-255. Hanging with my Browns friends at a local sports bar on Thursday night, just long enough to mock their 7th overall. Hopefully, the Niners won't do something like trade up....unless it is for Eric Berry.

The following Big Board is the complete board, covering all 255 picks. I have a current 5 year winning streak over all the major big dogs in the industry (more picks overall being selected in the entire draft), even better than Mel's hair. I expect the streak to crash and burn at some point, but we'll see how badly the carnage appears in just a few days.

Once again, as always, thanks to all the board members who helped me craft this list over the last 11 months and 30 days. OTC (the Board Guru), Ghost, mayo, NinersGM, AB, BigWads, Darth, Jeff22, DaveWilcox, lamont, mbrock, KRS, SD (I love you brother...the Niners will beat 0-16 this year) PT, oldninersman and dude, and the professor, jimbagg, and many, many others who kicked the crap out of me, but sharpened this list in the process. I'd stack the brilliant minds on our Draft Board Forum against any in the NFL. Thanks for the fun ride.

Once again, this is not a full, pick-by-pick draft. There are going to be so many trades this year that our eyes will be bulging, and our Round by Round sheets will have more ink from crossed out team names than the original printer ink. So, the projection is based on slotting. I'm searching for a ballpark estimate for the Niners in Round 4, not a specific person.

However, I have put the Niners selections in the draft in bold. It is very challenging to compose a first round mock, or any mock for that manner, since I believe there will be a high amount of movement. For the first time in a LONG TIME, there appears to be as many teams that want to move up as down. I just see the board playing out something like the below scenario.

Have fun, and enjoy the ride. Cheers.

Thanks, now I can't cheat.

MadDog, after the draft is over, can you post who you would have taken if you were the 49ers? It would be fun to compare your success with the 49er drafting organization. I remember the year that you were spot on about all of the 3rd and 4th round picks that the 49ers wasted (like Joe Cohen). I can't remember all of the picks, but I think they may have all failed.

I'd be happy to add my thoughts as the draft goes along, and people can argue for their pick. The debate should be fun.

Post-draft, pick-by-pick assessment (this is what I would have done) is often flawed, since you already know who will be on the board in each round. Snap analysis, which is what teams have to do, is a fairer assessment.

Very pumped for the draft. Only two hours away.
