Barrows: Niners not likely to draft Spiller

How much faith do you have in Coffee...our latest mid round gem?

Coffee weighed in at 209 at over 6' tall last year, just 13 lbs heavier than Spiller. If the 49ers pass on him it will have nothing to do with his build, because the man is solid like rock.

I agree, Spiller adds 5 lbs and Scotty's got his big back. All noise if you ask me.

People forget that just yesterday both McLoughan and Singletary were saying that they needed to find a way to preserve Gore. Singletary gave more clues that McLoughan did though. I think McLoughan might be throwing up smoke and mirrors. He knows the Niners have plenty of size on offense. That means he also knows they have very little speed.

THIS

And his size/speed FA Brandon Jones is .... well ... injury prone so this philosophy can't be absolute.

BIGS getting hurt:

Tony Pashos
David Baas
Marvel Smith
Curtis Taylor
and the ever popular...

Geesh, people act like it is a done deal that Spiller is the second coming of Chris Johnson just because he is fast.

I think the Niners would be better off fixing their OL and holes in the defense in the first round than getting a change of pace back/kick returner, which can be had in the 2nd or 3rd round. However, I don't really care. Either/or, they will get their man and hopefully he will be good and contribute next year.
I think Spiller is getting overrated anyways just because of the success of Chris Johnson and Desean Jackson. Let's not forget that Tennessee has one of the best OL in the league (notice how Adrian Peterson's stats cratered as Vikes OL suddenly aged overnight this season) and that Jackson is a WR and PR specialist whereas Spiller is a RB/KR guy mainly.

We need speed on offense and Spiller will give us that. 6'2" 220 guys don't run 4.3. Get me some Spiller.

Just what I was thinking.

yeah but Scotty Mac actually has a history of going for the big guys and passing on the small ones in the early rounds, I think Barrows mentions Brandon Williams being the only exception

And, this McDisaster philosophy has delivered us Chilo Rachal instead of DeSean Jackson, and the Steelers Rashard Mendenhall rather than Chris Johnson.

Here is the deal: This is not a BIG MAN league, this is a BIG PLAY league. Teams that make plays wins games. Spiller is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. Glen Coffee is not.

Educate McDisaster before it's too late MD!!!

Agree
We may pick him. It's possible. It's also possible he is gone before we pick.
I think MB is reading way too much into McGM's comments. In general he's right that professional football is a big man's game . . . but not at EVERY single position.

Damn, MadDog, I didn't know you were on the Spiller bandwagon. Totally agree with you.
Well, if you take Scottie as his word, that he likes Big and he wants to spell Gore, there are some big running backs, 230-40 lbs, in the 2nd through 4th rounds that would float his boat.
Jonathan Dwyer
Legarrette Blount
Toby Gerhart

I would take Spiller, but I don't have Scottie on my speed dial.
