ESPN's Todd McShay's First Impressions of OL, TE and Specialists

Although it may be overkill for some, I will continue to advocate the Niners use their two first round draft picks on OL until this line is fixed. Clearly, it is the weakest unit on the squad, and until it is overhauled, then Alex Smith has little chance to move his game to the next level, our running game will limp along, and our defense will be parked on the field way too much.

Iupati is going to be one of the best players in this draft, regardless of position. The scouts at the Senior Bowl made the observation that he was the player most likely to Pro-Bowl from all the attendees. So, you pull the trigger at 13, and you don't have to worry about someone leapfrogging you, or punking you by grabbing him earlier than expected. At 17, you get the best available OT, or target the best OT in the second round.

Either way, this team needs to replace two positions, at LG and RT, so I say get it done at once. If you HAVE to bite on a player other than an OL with one of the first rounders, then at least cover your tracks in the mid-second.

I could not agree with you more, I think 13 is where you pick Iupati and let a tackle fall into our laps at 17. We proved with Staley that you don't need to spend a top 15 pick on a tackle to get a good one, and this class is of tackles is much deeper.
I'm now on the Campbell bandwagon...he's got a very unique blend of size, speed, toughness and athleticism that OL Coach Solari will just love. He has all the attributes Solari's looking for and can obviously play LT. Williams didn't have much success there and I dont think you draft an OT who can't play both positions. Especially if we sign Sproles, the 1st rd then could well become Campbell and Iupati, thus our OL upgrade, at least through the draft is done in the 1st rd.

You're speaking my language man. I still want Davis and Iupati in the first.

Those guys will give us a disgusting wall to run/pass behind. Wouldn't mind a trade down in the 2nd to grab McCluster who I still like a lot more in the 2nd/3rd round than I do Spiller in the top 20.

Davis/Iupati + McCluster >>>>>>> Spiller + leftovers

I was against two OL in the 1st a month ago. Now i'm definitely warming to the idea, especially if we get McC/Sproles/Best.
