I think these guys are our best bets on the DL. But, the upcoming season has to be played.

Defensive Ends

1. Ndamukong Suh 6' 4" 305 Nebraska

7.5 sacks and 16.5 tackles for loss and 76 total tackles

2. Vince Oghobaase 6' 6" 305 Duke

6 sacks and 9 tackles for loss and 51 total tackles

3. Arthur Jones 6' 4" 296 Syracuse

3.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss and 60 total tackles

4. Lawrence Marsh 6' 4" 304 Florida[/b]

3 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss and 28 total tackles

5. DeMarcus Granger 6' 3" 306 Oklahoma

0 sacks and 2.5 tackles for a loss and 20 total tackles

Nose Tackles

1. Dan Williams 6' 3" 326 Tennessee

1.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss and 48 total tackles

2. Terrence Cody 6' 2" 365 Alabama

0.5 sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss and 24 total tackles

3. Boo Robinson 6' 2" 325 Wake Forest

5 sacks and 6 tackles for loss and 47 total tackles

If Terrence Cody drops at least 15 pounds, he will be the highest rated NT.

Haven't heard of Dan Williams, but I will be keeping a eye out for him now that you mention him. Too bad we can't see these guys in a true 3-4 alignment. But doing some research on Williams, the sacks isn't what opens my eyes about NT's, its the TFL and tackles made. In two years Williams has 15 TFL and 88 tackles made, that's better than BJ Raji, except Raji has more sacks.

Walterfootball.com has Williams projected as a 3rd-4th round pick. Sure that's early projections, but I'd say if he has another year like his past two then I'd have to say 1st-2nd round pick, pending Combine results of course.

Buck, wheres your 3rd DE?

Good question. He must be holding out. I will go look for him.

I found him. It was DeMarcus Granger. He was looking at coats. I had dropped him from 3rd to 5th because of the lack of production and off field problems.

5. DeMarcus Granger 6' 3" 306 Oklahoma

0 sacks and 2.5 tackles for a loss and 20 total tackles

I edited the original post. Thanks for the heads up.

He should have been

Suh is currently playing NT in a 3-4 alignment at Nebraska, but certainly possesses the versatility to play DE as well... I personally see him as the #1 priority for us (after trading our 2nd first rounder for Shawn Merriman of course) pending the development of Sopoaga at NT in a 3-4 system which will have him one-gap much more often than he has ever been allowed to do - If he is able to simply rely on his instincts, I still believe he can fulfill his enormous upside.

P.S. Im predicting that Terrence Cody completely falls out of the first round. He is simply too out of shape to be a three-down D-lineman and was completely nullified during the 2nd half of last season as he began to wear down physically.
As of now I'm not to excited about the NT's out there. We don't need any more DE with Smith, McDonald, Balmer, Evans. Well, at least it doesn't seem to be a first round need at the moment.

As far as NTs I don't think there is a sure fire stud out there. We need a Wilfork, Ngata, Casey Hampton because we have enough "backup NTs". I don't want a NT by committee (Soap, Franklin, Fields).
if you notice Manusky seems to favor "smaller" NTs (~310lbs vs 340), meaning that Suh can fit that role in our system. This can be Evidenced by trying out Balmer at NT, and drafting RJF as a possible NT. After all, his mentor in Dallas seems to have made it work. I think Wilfork is the other option. Very surprise if we go for another DE with an early pick

Ngata plays more DE than NT for the Ravens. He is still a solid player though.

Williams plays more of a one gap style if you ask me. MOre of a 4-3 DT than a 3-4 NT IMO

That might be a function of the defense that Tennessee plays, and not a true indication of his potential to play the nose in a 3-4.

Like I said, haven't heard or watched Dan Williams before so I couldn't really discuss this with you. But what's your reason for saying so??
49ers should do everything they can to get Cody. You have him on the roster to sit behind Franklin or rotate with him. That way we have Soap and Balmer at LDE with Smith and McDonald at RDE. Cody imo could be the closest NT prospect to being a sure thing there is next year. Hopefully he doesnt garner so much attention that he ends up being a top 8 pick.
